How can burst radiator cost me an engine??

Yes, actually very satisfied with the job done by the small town engineers. They really tested out my car for one full day, computer check, test drive in and out, jack up and down, out again..until they confirmed all OK. On top of that, they also help me to save 1000RM off from the original quotes, which very unlikely in KL.

I am sorry about your merc211 issues, this makes me feel much better..hehehee

Just wondering is the gasket REALLY burnt or the Nissan people simply said so because you told them the engine overheated? Have you tried restarting the engine after refilling the coolant? I've had some bad overheating incidents in the past too but find it takes a lot to really kill a motor...

Thank you for your comments.

I guessed you also find it hard to believe such incident can cost an engine. To answer your questions, yes, the gasket gone. Reason? 1) When add water back to radiator and start engine, water was gushing out like volcano. This is clear symptoms of gasket burnt. 2) Open up the engine oil cap, water was already inside the engine. Oil color changed to brown, symptoms of oil mixed with water.

As you said, other cars will not likely to have such problems even engine dies because of overheating.

I only blame myself to own a Nissan which does not have a fault system to prevent engine fry. But was told newer Nissan have such system to prevent it....sigh

heat is always a main concern in any engine, actually extreme cold too a problem.
in fact extreme temperature is a problem for many parts in a vehicle beside engine.

actually there is a lot of fancy meter out there in the market, where like boost meter when over limit, it give code red, same goes to the temperature.

you can always fix a 3 temperature to monitor the temp, i not too sure how many vehicle is currently have self auto cut off when your car over heat, do they turn off your engine by themself ?

Thank you all for your valuable comments.

As promised, here is my updates on my car situations. Take note my engine replacements are done by Nissan authorised center and some info are their comments:

1) The cause - Top radiator part, which is fiberglass, major crack 6 inches long. This caused the coolant dry up too fast for sensor to detect to show on dashboard for overheat. Make sense? I somehow understand better now

2) Cost to overhaul - Gasket RM1,200, aluminum head cost RM3,800 a piece, need two to replace. Yes can skim, but may have ongoing engine overheat problem based on their past experience with skim block.

3) Used engine from Mun Lee - RM1,100 engine kosong. Not great condition, high mileage according to Nissan mechanic. Mun Lee may have 50 engines, but you hardly can choose your own because they all stacked up on top each other. They had to use forklift to bring down the engine, so this part they are reluctant to do. Managed to select one out of two engines which already somewhere on the floor, but don't trust what they said. You will have to be expert to view the engine condition, otherwise bring along your mechanic to choose. Transport from KL to Batu Pahat cost RM70. Warranty oni 2 weeks cover for overheat and high fuel consumption.

4) Nissan Labor cost - RM850 for engine assembly work (more than a week job) Other compulsory parts has to be replace like oil seal, hose, etc..all adds up total bill RM2,300 including labor. Not bad?

5) Replaced engine condition - had my car on Sunday, rev it up on highway up to 160kmh seemed running smooth, but bit high fuel consumption compare to original engine. A bit rough and noisy when idling.

Conclusion? Feeling is never be the same, it just like have a older heart in your body. When buy used engine, make sure don't rush and find the best one available, unless your ori engine already hit 300K. The used engine have serious carbon built up where my ori engine clean like new, shining clean. Another advise from Nissan, replace the top radiator part with aluminum if possible, this will eliminate such problems.

Good luck to all A32 VQ engine owners. Cheers from Calvin

Yes they did advised about this skimming, but they experienced from clients with ongoing overheat problems, if not keep refilling coolant ...

There is a saying, its better hope than no hope..but hope from gomen is no better than no hope...sigh.

Totally agreed and opted for engine replacement. VQ heads cost RM3,800 a piece, you need to replace both heads, expensive? Yes god damm it is..
Glad you have the ole lady fixed with 2k+ . Not only A32 are giving such overheating headaches. Even fairly new sentra shares similar overheating problem, Moral of the story if your are drivin a nissan keep an eye on the temp gauges. cheers!

My A32 had a broken radiator once...

Managed to drive from Johor to KL, but the engine temperature was fluctuating throughout the journey. We had 5 people on board. Upon reaching KL, we decided to check with Tan Chong and found that the Top Housing of the radiator has cracked and there was a major leak.

My car is a 1997 with a 3.0 engine.

Usually, the top or under the radiator would crack as its made some sort of fiberglass. I'm planning to change to an aluminium radiator when I have extra $$$ . Runs cooler and longer lasting..

GSR will shut down the engine if no coolant in radiator

I have original A33 radiator...let me know if you want. You can come bring it and ask your mech to test for fitting.
If can fit, then only pay me...

easier to detect once you off the engine after a hot drive..

hot water will leak out..

yeah.. it is very easy to notice when look at coolant spare tank. Fluid level will go down if leak.

I will check engine bay once a while for safety purpose.

The best if you use the green colored coolant, if it leaks you can see the green fluid...

HI! Calvin, saw your sharing on the change of engine. Can i check with you that your total damage was RM2300? I have the same problem with my X-trail here in JB, the engine oil has turn to brown color. I was quoted by a workshop in JB RM4500 to replacing the engine. Do you mind to provide me more information & your HP number to save nearly half of money on the engine replacement. Thanks in advance.

KKF,

You need to know difference engine have difference price tags.

A Wira 1.5L engine cost more than a VQ20
