Incorrect Speedometer Readings

Hi, I basically bought over a proton with a VR4 engine. The previous owner couple the engine with the original putra speedometer however after driving for awhile i noticed the readings are not correct. It's registering faster than what it should. Probably about 20km faster. Any ideas of how to solve this? The current rim size is 16 and IMO that should not affect till the readings are off by 20km/h.:hmmmm:

GSR,Evo and Vr4 meters are the same? Then must go the chop shot to check it out.

cos gsr,evo vr4 all max out at 180 kmh. if putra is 240 if not mistaken, so maybe there
the speedometer lari.

...or the speed sensor not compatible? i.e. VR4 reading is different than a putra?

Hmmm putra's meter reads till 260. Speed sensor? Doesn't the older mitsu use cable?

I have this reason and revrntly solved it... My speedo was showing 20km/h above the real speed. After a few weeks, the speedo totally malfunction. Sent to shop the mech said my speedo meter cable broke. So I guess maybe previously, it was loose already or almost breaking. That's why the reading sotz... Din't know if your problem is the same...

guys..jez wana ask, how bout if the RPM meter jumping up n down..n sometimes ok,sometimes not..wut probably the cause of this problem??

In my case I don't know about the history of the meter. Not sure whether the meter was accurate before that.

car acceleration seems fine..not jerking at all, only the rpm needle..

Install a RSM~ ^^ then key in your wheel's diameter and it will calculate the right speed for you. If wan to get more accurate speed reading, add on the G-sensors~ ^^ can even get 0-100KMH and 0-400m sprint data~ ^^

car acceleration seems fine..not jerking at all, only the rpm needle..

i had the same problem when low rev ok. when revving the car the meter jumps to 8k and back to 3k then jump again but car no jerk or anything.. found out that the coil sensor loose.. now ok already.. try checking all the sensor...

Its happen to me also..when i calibrate my speedometer with honda SR3, it seem my car speed is 10kmh much faster..im using RVR manual 4wd gearbox with satria 1.6 speedometer...i try find for the solution at internet and find it at this forum..Expo trans? New source? Update: It fits. | Galant VR-4 > How To and Info Archive | GalantVR-4.org Mitsubishi Galant VR4 Forum ..u need to count the drive gear teeth first..VR4, gsr and evo tranny should not give problem on speed reading..u also can check the code of your gearbox.. http://www.lancerregister.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=117701&stc=1&d=1222869000 mayb your gearbox isnt from VR4 tranny..RVR gearbox code is W5M332MXXX or W5M332UMXX..i just change the speedometer drive gear from proton gearbox..the problems solve..just D.I.Y..very easy...hope can help you..just for sharing..happy motoring

Thanks for the link, anyway what you mean is the speedo I'm using is a proton but because the speedo linkage from the g/b is from mitsu it's a mismatch?

i'm suspecting the teeth of the speedometer drive gear (if your current teeth is below 29) is not match with the proton speedometer..the speedometer works by counting on the revolution of the speedometer drive gear..smaller gear revolve much faster compare to bigger gear..if i'm no mistaken standard proton speedometer drive gear is 31 teeth..before that, please check ur speedometer cable and speedometer panel condition first..
