Dear all,

I have recently spike of interest to swap a better engine into my BMW 318ci (E46). My concern is with JPJ endorsement that now restricts me to swap an engine which its capacity is way over the limits. For e.g, dumping a 3.0L engine into my BMW's engine bay. So far has any BMW bros done this conversion or just stick to 2.0L range?

Thanks,

You can try see got any crank that fits to stroke the capacity bigger using same block. I know there was older model that did it but it was quite a while back....

1jz is 2.5cc, cannot endorse as 1.8 max 25% engine cc upgrade hence the highest is 2.2cc.

Aikssss....Then how those car do it? I mean, they just illegal drive it out? They cant have road tax or insurance?

Well, there is the legal way, illegal way and the legal illegal way........hhahahhahahahhahaha:biggrin:

Even some high cc cars are being registered in Sabah (lower road tax rate) and used in West Malaysia and actually is illegal but there are people still doing it....:rolleyes:

Malaysia BOLEH!!!!:rofl::rofl:

u could go for 320i 2.2cc engine 6 pot

Is this engine from the other E46 coupe models as well? If could i would like to transplant with gearbox. SMG or Manual gearboxes. But i think manual gearboxes for E46 is hard to source.

You prefer to run on NA only? Because i have seen some that run on a 1JZ engine.

Yup, i prefer NA :). Or perhaps i would supercharged the new engine with Mini Cooper S supercharger kit. Since Mini Cooper is made by BMW anyways.

Malaysia BOLEH!!!!:rofl::rofl:

More accurately, the KOPI-KO power.....
Kopi money makes thing "work", in strange way.....

to make things work, there should be kopi server and kopi drinker......:biggrin:

The more demanding the situation, the more "kaw" the kopi should be.....:biggrin:

If you wish, you can try replacing the current 1.8L 4-cyl to a 2.0L 6-cyl M50, get it endorsed and later either:
- stay with the engine series specific and build towards an M50 2.8L
- or replace the 6-cyl with say a M54 3.0L and have the engine stamped to reflect the M50 series

Hello Tom,

I have my sight set on a 6cyl M43 which produces 170bhp, its another engine for the e46 coupe as well. Sadly i think this engine is pretty rare, can be found on most UK spec BMWs. The M50 was the base for S50 engine it appears. Great suggestion, however how hard is it to find such engine?

The M43 is a 4-Cyl engine:

BMW M43 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The BMW M43 is a straight-4 SOHC piston engine which replaced the M40 and was produced from 1991-2002.[1] Displacement ranges from 1.6 L to 2.0 L. The M43 powered base-model cars, while higher performance models at the time were powered by the DOHC M42 or M44.

I just re-read that you have the E46 318ci, had initially assume it was the E36 318i coupe.

In that case the M50 might be a little old for your E46, though it's still a good candidate. Available in abundance. I'm sure a call to any big shops in KL will yield results

good luck

Dear Tom,

My search for engine swap still continues. Man it was a tiring journey, haven't been replying to this post since i am busy with my day job.

Lots of junkyard guys suggest me to source for a M54B22 (2.2 L) engine. It has around 160hp on crank and it's still within limitation for JPJ endorsement. My the other concern is the auto gearbox. Sourcing for another gearbox is harder than the engine. I opt for manual, but don't know which model to take.

Anyone has brighter suggestion?

Hi guys,

I'm reviving this thread to discuss on the engine swap for my E46. My stock engine M43B19 still very good though. I'm right now looking into 1JZGTE single turbo conversion along with its auto slush box cause I'm building this for my lady. Has anyone got any very experience garage that knows how to do this project. My budget is around RM16k for this conversion. I knew about BMW Convert Club from Shah Alam but i am looking into more garages.

Please advise.

I do. Having reviewed several BMW 1JZ cars in my website, all have a few good recommendations. There was this one though who's an owner of a BMW convert, runs a workshop and is very friendly. If you like I can PM you his contact. His is an auto as well but an E30.

I see that he is the boss of Primus Auto Car Care, that name somehow sounds familiar. Yes i would like his contact. Or you could, you can invite him to share his experience in this forum?
