In its bid for a 10th Le Mans title next year, Audi has unveiled its latest Le Mans prototype, the R18, that comes with a closed cockpit for improved aerodynamics and reduced driver fatigue as well.

Part of the reason for a closed cockpit is the fact that engine power will be cut down, thus raising the importance of aerodynamics. The R18 will get its power from a 3.7-liter TDI V6, but Audi are holding back on the power figures, though previous models prove that turning a blind eye to it would be foolish. Gearing is provided by a new six-speed sequential transmission. Furthermore, the biggest visual change would be the fin that stretches from the roof of the cockpit to the rear, something to improve stability and reduce the chances of flipping over.

There has also been some mention of energy recovery to further complement the smaller power output.

Audi have worked to reduce weight and improve chassis stiffness to negate the downfall from the reduced engine power by using a single-piece carbon fiber monocoque chassis.

As for the Le Mans race next year, Audi are planning to run three R18’s but their first appearance will only be at the six hours of Spa in Belgium on 24 April, followed by Le Mans 24 Hours, Imola six hours, Silverstone six hours, Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta in October and the China six hours race.

This time around, the headlights will get a truck load of LEDs. The daytime running LEDs work to form a ‘1’ when in use, a clear signal to rivals Audi on their intention to win that 19th title next year.

i wonder if audi still could keep up with pug's speed (who knows that pug might get a better reliability while having bigger power)

:hmmmm:

Goshh..this is madness!! This Le Mans 'full suite' chassis makes F1 like wearing bikinis..hihihi ..maybe Pak Cik 'Leman' marah kot.. :P haha

Lets hope the Audi is as quick as the Peugeot this time. Looking forward to another exciting Le Mans season including the jewel in the crown, Le Mans 24 hr race.

I think Aston Martin is going open top, which seems surprising
