Boost question, help appreciated

Hi all I have just purchased a airtrek turbo, I have a issue with it and am hoping you can help.

from what I understand they make 11psi as standard and that's roughly what the car is producing,after I put a gauge on it today but sometimes it feels very slow and does not boost correctly.

This happens 50% of the time, I checked the resistance on the actuator today and it was very weak could this cause such a problem or would it be low boost all the time if the actuator was faulty.

Also finally what is the safe amount of boost you can run on the standard turbo with a boost controller and no other mods? I read you can run 1 bar(14 psi) maybe a little more is this correct?

If your actuator is faulty and not working properly, your boost may be leaking out, that is why you are not getting your power.

I think it is safe to 1 bar but not more just to be on the safe side.....

Thanks, I will check the actuator tomorrow and then crank the boost up to 1 bar.

In stock condition (no mods at all), 1 bar is safe. I've pushed as far as 1.3 bar last time with minimal mods like IC piping, air filter and exhaust. It surely makes a lot of difference for the stock 0.6 bar up to 1.3 bar. Felt really good.

Hi just had the boost raised today to just under a 1 bar and it feels great, will leave it like this for now but from what you said 1.2 bar is safe for turbo/engine etc. The fueling/knock dett was checked when the boost was raised and it was perfect no dett and plenty of fuel. Thanks again for you help. I wouldnt mind 1.2 bar but was unsure whether it would be safe for the tdo4 and engine internals.

Again if i did go for 1.2 bar i would have the fueling/dett(knock) checked also.

Going above 1.2 bar doesn't make much difference in terms of power for the stock td04. So stay below 1.2 is all good for td04.

I have fren running max 1.3bar daily stock internal without issues for years except price of ron 97... but tuned with management of course

Quite lucky here in the UK we get 98 and 99 ron fuel so I run it on shell optimax which is either 98 or 99.

Thanks for the help guys I will be running it at 1.05bar for now as it felt like a massive improvement at 0.9. Its my daily drive so that's plenty of boost! Famous last words

Is not only the matter of the Ron when you increase the boost, is running lean then will have problem. Can even burn the engine....

i think for td04....its already at the edge of if efficiency map at 1.1bar....pushing it more than 1.3bar would only pumping hot air and less cfm...not to mention killing the turbo faster

A fairly good tuner with bolt on supportive mods like full exhaust, adjustable fuel regulator, air filter and intercooler piping with healthy engine can push the stock TD04 to 230whp. That's almost 300hp in crank. So if you want a decent day to day drive without the turbolag, TD04 is the one to choose from.

Had the boost set to just a touch under 1.1bar peak and it feels good, it does tail off a lot to around 0.9bar but its a pretty standard car with its cat still in/airbox and standard intercooler. I am very happy with it thanks for all your help. I will look out for a decat and that will be it for me. With the standard exhaust and airbox its a nice relaxing drive.

Decat & get a less restricted muffler, you'll be surpised that your car will be much more responsive and better fuel economy too. Just stay with stock sized piping.
