Brake Pedal Over Travel Switch

Hey there fellow car enthusiasts!

Im a new member here...just wanting to learn more...
currently im still studying and im in a motorsport team in my university....
Right now, we're in the process of building,designing and fabricating a formula style race car...which will be brought to compete against other universities in a competition called Formula SAE (http://www.fsae.com/ )...i have a question which need some feedback.hope u all can help me out here..

What is this term "brake pedal over travel" switch?
what does it mean by "brake over travel"? and any idea how to make it? (its part of the requirement for designing the race car)
