Connect ipod to Alpine 9835

Hi..Can anyone tell me if its possible to connect the ipod to my HU without buying the Alpine adapter? I was told that all we need is and Auxiliary cable. Anybody familiar with this??

if u use it as aux, u need rca to ainet cable and connect thru changer ainet socket, but it wont charge the ipod nor will it integrate the song list into the display and u cant control anything in the ipod from the HU, have to do it from ipod direct.
