Bro, you are spot on with this. A lightened crank damper will lead to premature wear of the engine main bearing. In severe cases, your crank can literally crack! The crank pulley is more than simply a pulley, it's also a resonance dampener. Basically, for high-mileage road engines, I wouldn't bother messing with it. I know they're currently popular and being sold for all sorts of engines and applications, but it doesn't mean it's good. As with everything else that OEMs do, if it was so good, they would have done it already. It's not about smoothness, it's about longevity. Additionally, the gain from lightened pulleys is like pffftt - not enough to make a difference to the engine!! Lightening the flywheel works because flywheels weigh like 10kg or more, plus the weight is carried over a larger radius. Now, simple maths/physics will prove that the further out the mass, the more energy is required to move it (change it's state: inertia). So when we have lightened flywheels, we usually focus on the outer sections, and also the weight savings are incredible ie 60%-70% is it's a proper chromoly steel flywheel. And thus the benefits are huge in terms of reducing inertia: power does not change, but engine response does, as well as acceleration. For engine pulleys, what you really want is you're looking at additional power is an 'under-drive pulley'. This is a pulley which has a smaller diameter, and therefore spins up that little bit quicker and has a little less friction. What this means is that your alternator will probably not start charging till 1500rpm as against to 800rpm for a stock pulley. Again, for high-performance/racing applications, the car isn't stuck in idle at traffic jams so alternator charging is not an issue. The gains you can expect from an underdrive pulley? Probably 1hp from our 2L engine. Maybe 1.5hp if you're lucky :) But as it'll be an aftermarket job out of aluminum alloy with no rubber dampener, it'll still screw the harmonics. /adian
