purpose of modding the pc just to look unique and nice?
purpose of the competition?

i can understand the desire to modify to have a better (faster/more reliable/more powerful) pc.

but to have a pc in a remote control car, in a tyre??? what's the purpose?

i do however, really like the third prize winner's idea of cooling the processor

well sometimes people think that they spend quite an amount for 31137 hardware their computer should look the part too or for individuality. since you're in ZTH you know why people modify their cars, for example a SGTi owner, some just to make their car look better and different from every other silver SGTi running around town. the same can be said for pc modders, they're just not satisfied with uncle looking grey/beige boxes on their desktops.

purpose of the competition?

i guess its just to see how creative we can get, in US some of the casing modders are local hero's and get invited to work with case makers to design casing for mass market or niche market use. sleek looking and mod intended designs like the Auroro from Alienware weren't made by old skool pc casing designers.

okay lets compare PC and car modders to make it simplier to understand :P
most of the time he/she wants to max out his hardware performance by adding a few extra hardware/software to tweak it to perfection, then maybe he thinks since he got nice looking and expensive hardware like SLI graphic cards he wanna show it off with a plexiglass side panel so people can see the cool stuff inside.

of course just like car modding there is a fine line between coolness and riceness
