Renowned racing circuit designer Hermann Tilke reassured the international racing community that the freshly laid track at Yeongam will survive the inaugural Korean grand prix this weekend.
The top layer of asphalt has just been laid and the oils are still seeping to the surface. There are fears that there cold be a repeat of the 1985 grand prix at Spa that was called off because the track broke up.
“It will probably have little grip in the beginning. But they are the best drivers in the world and must cope with it. But the track will become faster by the seconds until Sunday” said the designer of the 5.6km track.
McLaren’s chief engineer, Phil Prew, reinforced Tilke’s views, “I walked the circuit this morning and the track surface didn't look too bad. It wasn't particularly greasy underfoot and it looked - from what you can tell - smooth, well-laid and consistent all the way around.”
Whatever the outcome, the first ever Korean GP this weekend should be one that sticks in our minds for a long time to come and will be an interesting challenge to the drivers belting it out for the championship.
