i not sure if this is the right place to open this thread.. hope ur guys can help !!


Questions :

1. what is mean by 15W50, 20W50 in every lubricants name ??
2. what is axle oil lubricant, did a normal passenger car required to change or it's only for big truck ??
3. viscosity meaning in terms of lubricant?? hw about viscosity index?? Higher better or lower??

okie sir, i'll try to help a lil since i have time on the weekends, and its time for work just yet..

all those numerical with the "w" are oil dat is multigrade, this oil grade dependant on temperature. the first numerical value shows the condition of the oil when its at 0degreeC, so when its cold, ur oil is behaving like what the numerical represents. when its hot, it behaving like the second numerical value. the second number shows viscosity iirc

2. what is axle oil lubricant, did a normal passenger car required to change or it's only for big truck ??
axle oil lubricant is used for axles, an axle is similar to a gearbox, it is used to transfer loads from the engine to the tyres. if a passenger car is equipped with an axle, then u need to change its lube according to the oem specification sir.

3. viscosity meaning in terms of lubricant?? hw about viscosity index?? Higher better or lower??
viscosity is fluids' resistance to movement, a lower viscosity fluid is said to be better then a higher one because a thinner fluid is easier to pump compared to a thicker one. to me, its either by preference, needs, or better yet follow the the oem recommendation.

oh ya :
1.from the internet, i read that oil is thicker at low temperature hard 2 flow but at high temperature it bcome thinner more easy 2 flow. So, 20W50 still confusing since number higher mean hard to flow. I mean y the number not 50W20 ??
 
yes, u r rite sir, to sum extend.. let me give an example, a 0w-50 is easier to flow during cold start compared to a 15w-50, so whats stated in the first numerical doesnt show viscosity per say, but rather how it flows at 0degC. the second numerical shows viscosity at 100degC, 40 is thinner and easier to flow, but may not be able to protect as good as a 50weight oil at operational temperature. at least dats what i understand from my researches.

one ques pop out, vehicle using petro n truck that use diesel.. this 2 use same lubricant or different ??
 
a good question sir, they may use the same base oil, but the additive package may be, and usually is different between the two application. sum says diesel engine oils are more robust, to withstand dat high heat of diesel engine. i wud highly suggest staying with ur manual's recommendation
