Like acbc said, firstly, Proton may have jacked up the price to get their ROI in the quickest time possible. Secondly, the deals with Mitsubishi really are crap in which Proton have to pay through their noses for using Mitsubishi technology...no fault of Mitsubishi's but the incompetent idiot from Proton who did the deal with Mitsubishi. Thirdly, problems with subcons not being able to deliver quality parts at competitive prices due to not having the economy of scale or generally fucking around and not doing a good job. Of course, there is also the question of did Proton actually give the job to the most deserving and the most competitive subcon instead of someone they "prefer". Too many problems, too many questions, all a case of crap management and politics.
