TRW uses the term Cognitive Safety Systems to describe how "we put the thinking" into vehicle safety systems. By creating more intelligent systems, we aim to raise safety to a higher level than ever before.

ADVANCED THINKING
Helping to protect people: Our sensor, electronic, driver assistance and integrated systems are raising the intelligence of vehicles.

SMART THINKING
Smart thinking is all about value: TRW is delivering enhanced value to make safety affordable for all - whether that’s through modularity, integration or cost optimization.

GREEN THINKING
Improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions are global targets: Beyond powertrain, TRW offers a range of technologies to meet these goals.

TRW BRAKING SYSTEM

As a world leader in Foundation Brake design, development and supply, TRW offers a wide range of applications for passenger cars and trucks, including disc and drum brake solutions that cover the full spectrum from cost optimized to high performance brake solutions for small car to luxury vehicle segments.

To address ever-increasing CO2 emission reduction and fuel economy requirements, TRW has developed improved residual drag features and is offering lightweight components to meet fuel efficiency requirements.

Manufacturing
TRW produces over 12,000,000 OE and Independent Aftermarket (IAM) discs every year. 3D technology is used to re-engineer all of TRW’s discs using only OE samples. Again TRW has derived its own testing and product specification from its extensive OE background.

Although TRW stipulates that brake discs should only be changed in pairs, certain country legislations also make it necessary to offer single-packed discs. For those regions where the different packaging is required, the part numbers are denoted with an “S” suffix on the TRW part number. This will also apply to the larger sized discs, which only fit in individual boxes.

Testing
X-ray and Metalloscopic tests ensure the absence of cracks and imperfections in all TRW's brake discs, and the mechanical properties are checked in every batch of castings. TRW's engineering department not only carries out initial tests on brake disc machining and materials, but conforming to TRW standards, is also insistent on regular tests to ensure no deviations are present. TRW brake discs are submitted to regular dynamometer tests, but also real world tests as nothing can substitute a subjective opinion, especially where issues such as judder are concerned.

12 million
TRW produces 12 million brake discs every year both for Original Equipment Service (OES) and the independent aftermarket worldwide, enjoying a leading market position. TRW has a range of 1012 part numbers covering 98% of the European parc.

The Search Goes On
Always at the forefront of innovation, we never stop in our quest for the very latest new developments in disc technology for original equipment and OES. As a result, our aftermarket organization benefits of the latest technology transfer. Our product development division has created a portfolio of technical solutions to ensure that you can offer the most up to date products to your customers.

All Round Safety
TRW has studied the driving and braking characteristics of cars and commercial vehicles for over 50 years. Because we produce every type of vehicle safety solution, we know how they should all work together to protect the passengers inside. That is why we design and build our discs to be a balanced part of the braking dynamic.

Tighter Tolerances
TRW Aftermarket believes that our customers deserve the best. That is why we don’t compromise on raw material or on machining tolerances. All our castings are made of GG20 material or GG15HC for High Carbon. In addition, three other machining tolerances are important: the DTV: Disc Thickness Variation does not exceed 0,012mm; the Run Out 0,03 mm; and the central hole is according to H8 norm.
