So long I have not posted anything. But I try to explain from a non-expert point of view. But first...it would help if the thread starter be more specific about the point of this discussion. Is it for a project swap? Wikipedia has tons of information about engine spec figures or you could go here Browser Warning and use the search function to find any infos about engines. Now for any engine regardless of capacity usually make 70-80% of 100hp/liter in NA form(for 1.6 liter it would be around 110-120hp). This is would be consider standard tune with 10:1 compression ratio(typical for NA) with no tech whatsoever. To break the 100hp/liter mark in NA tune requires increasing the compression ratio, run high cams and high revving. But this will sacrifice drivability and only suitable for track purposes. Now lets talk about technology such as variable valve timing and lift (made famous by honda), direct fuel injection(such as VW,s FSI). They help manufacturers to make engine that's not only powerful but fuel efficient as well. So any engines that have these kind of technologies will have good spec figures. And finally forced induction. You can go crazy with forced induction with insane figures(for 1.6 litre, 160hp and above is normal for forced induction) but again at the sacrifice of drivability i.e turbos are laggy at low rev and supercharger are parasitic at high rev. But now manufacturers seem to be able to design engine combining all the technology like variable geometry turbo, variable valve timing, direct fuel injection and harmonizing it to create powerful yet fuel efficient engines plus low carbon emissions. Volkwagen even manage to perfected twincharging. It used to be forced induction engine have to run 8.0:1 compression ratio but with direct fuel injection a forced induction engine can go with 10:1 CR. For my pick of best street 1.6 litre engine that is still runnning; Ford 1.6 litre ecoboost or BMW's Prince in JCW Mini/Pug RCZ. For past engines that have been discontinued; Honda B16B, Mitsu 4G92 MIVEC. If you the ultimate 1.6 engine, wait for 2013 F1 season as they will be using 1.6 v6 turbo engines.
