Saw a recent Autocar article comparing all versions of the BMW 3 series. They did have a small section discussing the different M3s over the years but they never gave a definitive verdict. And this left me wondering, which version of BMW M3, is the best ever made? The E30? E36? Or the outgoing E46?

PS: No modded M3s or 3 series convert jobs.

Hmmm, fairly surprised to see the E30 in the lead. Hehe.

Lots of votes but no comments. Hey guys, try to share your views as to why you voted for that particular version.

For a moment I thought nobody voted.

Having been a passenger in a E30 M3 (I was really young then) Driven a E36 M3 Evo and also short drive in a E46, the E30 sticks to mind

If I could buy one I'd go for the balls out E30 M3 Sports Evolution (sadly only comes in Left Hand Drive and only a few were built )

Remember the original M3 was developed for Motorsports specifically Touring Cars , whereas the newer models dont' have the same pedigree

Yeah, the original was built for homologation purposes whereas its offsprings weren't

i have'nt had the opportunity to drive any of these machines... the closest is a friend's turbo-charged E46 325i, but its far from being an M3. However, i have read alot about the cars u listed and most say the E30 is best. The E30 M3 has an x-factor you can't quite put ur finger on as compared to the other M3's... One thing for sure, its definately a classic...

E30, at 1.2 tonne, the E30 makes all other M3 look overweight.
moreover, it was said by many to be the most fun of them all.

I cant comment on the E36 however, never tried
