The 2013 Formula One season could see a change in the layout of the engines used and the FIA will convene in less than a week to vote on the engine layout to be used for that season onwards.

Those with the smarts might want to put their money on a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder mill to take over from the current 2.4-liter V8. The report comes from the BBC and claims that the move is an attempt to create an engine to mirror the road-going mills and increase awareness on fuel consumption.

The FIA itself is looking to implement a 50 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency and a 10,000rpm limit for the engines. Nonetheless, they will allow the use of compound turbos and the current KERS to keep the engine’s output in the 600-750hp region for competitiveness.

Of course, a number of teams are upset with the news, including Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz. Even Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone is against it, claiming that the current engine layout is good. He went on to add that redevelopment would be a waste of money and could be an advantage for just certain teams.

Engine like 4age, 4g9x, b16b, campro.....etc. Motify it equivalent to F1 spec, it could be very interesting...

omg .... V12 to V8 ... now 1.6 liter.... future hybrid...

but they will definitely find a way to maintain or even improve the cars performance even though they are downgrading the engine's displacement
either through improved aerodynamics or the addition of turbochargers/superchargers

throttle valve before turbo compressor?
any roadcar using this layout?

Nice photo of the turbo BMW 1.5L 4cyl engine used in F1 in the 80s that generated reputedly around 1200-1400hp if not higher in qualifying. Block design was based on BMW's production 4cyl engine at the time.

oh noes.....a turbocharged 4 banger engine........boringgg.... y not watch AFOS instead...hehehe

yeah true but still cant beat the aerodynamics of the f1 cars which gives it the maximum possible downforce

He's talking about the engine la dude... not the car....

1983 1.5 twin turbo engine on F1 already touched the 1XXXHP benchmark...

That's a good question. I also wanna ask...

Just wondering since Supercharger also have the TB before the compressor and they are not facing any surge... Could this be the reason.. So that the compressed air only flow 1 direction...

Magnus 4g63T four bangers on drag... Still broke alot of V8 and V12 0-400m record... what's stopping 4 bangers from performing..?

If this engine in my car... even if Skyline, Porsche, Ferrari beside me, I will not fear them. I said 'Bring It On"....:burnout:

in d good old days of F1 racing,i think d teams r not adhered 2 strict ruling like one engine must last 4 @ least how many rounds, right?dats y can go all out n u c such insane figures frm a 1.5L mill.....but IF d rule remains whr an engine must last say @ least 4 rounds, can they still produce such power figure?i wonder.....hmmmm....

wow..after this we can see team lotus use the campro turbo F1 lah..haha..

Next year Team Lotus will involve in Renault:

Group Lotus has ramped up its involvement in Formula 1 by becoming title sponsor and a major shareholder in the rebranded Lotus Renault GP Team.

As AUTOSPORT exclusively revealed in October, Renault has revised its F1 strategy by selling the stake it had in its F1 team back to co-owners Genii Capital and will now focus on being just an engine supplier.

That move has allowed Genii to sell a stake to Group Lotus - which has led to a renaming of the outfit and a move for the team's colours to be in iconic black and gold next year.

The title sponsorship deal with Group Lotus is due to run until the end of the 2017 season, with Renault committing to supply engines to the team for a number of years.

Gerard Lopez, chairman of Renault F1 Team, said about the deal: "We are delighted that we can now go public with the news that we will be racing as Lotus Renault GP in 2011.

"It is extremely exciting to begin a new era for the team in partnership with Group Lotus, and we will continue to enjoy a strong relationship with Renault over the coming seasons. It is a tribute to the excellent work this year by the team in Enstone that we have been able to attract both major sponsorship and new investment for a very bright future."

The announcement of Group Lotus' plans for 2011 comes despite Tony Fernandes pushing on with his plans to race as Team Lotus next year - with his outfit now also having Renault engines and set to run in black and gold colours.

Group Lotus CEO Dany Bahar, who has been pushing aggressively for his company's return to motorsport, added: "I can think of no better platform for automotive brand communications than motorsport and F1 is the very pinnacle of open-wheel racing.

"We're well aware that there has been a lot of controversy around the usage of our brand in F1 and I'm delighted to be able to formally clarify our position once and for all: we are Lotus and we are back."
