Tired of maintaining your tyre pressure? Soon, there won't be a need to visit the petrol station for a jab of air. Thanks to Goodyear's laboratories new innovation, they are developing what's called the AMT (Air Maintenance Technology) that will soon enable tyres to remain inflated at their optimum pressure. Through what will be a miniaturized air pump integrated into the tyre itself. Sounds bizarre? Maybe not. It's a simple device NOT powered electronically but through the tyres' own kinetic energy as it rotates.

Jean-Claude Kihn, Goodyear’s senior vice president and chief technical officer says, “While the technology is complex, the idea behind the AMT system is relatively simple and powered by the tire itself as it rolls down the road. A tire that can maintain its own inflation is something drivers have wanted for many years. Goodyear has taken on this challenge and the progress we have made is very encouraging. This will become the kind of technological breakthrough that people will wonder how they ever lived without.”

They will be developing the AMT system at Goodyear's Innovation Centre in Colmar-Berg, Luxemburg which the Luxemburg government has pledged to support with an official grant in July.

“Innovation is a priority at Goodyear. The company innovates constantly to maintain its positive momentum, and this is an example of one of Goodyear great innovations. One of the main causes of premature tire wear and tear is due to improper inflated tires. With this ground breaking innovation, under inflated tires will soon be a problem of the past” says Richard Fleming Managing Director, Goodyear ASEAN.

wow nice.... wonder how much it would costs per tyre...

Electric device in tyres = Expensive??

But I think if the tyre is punctured then also nothing can do I guess...

The AMT from Goodyear does not operate electronically as said in the article

This may be how it will work:

SIT -- Self inflating tire - YouTube

How does it inflate a tire?

The SIT System is based on proven, highly reliable peristaltic pump principles. It integrates a tube chamber into the tire wall.

The tube chamber is kept closed at its lowest point by the normal tire deformation caused by the weight of the vehicle.

As the tire turns against the road this closure moves along the tube chamber, forcing more air into the tire with each wheel revolution. Simultaneously, it pulls outside air back into the chamber from the other side.
Can the pressure be adjusted?

The chamber continuously pushes air into the tire until it reaches its optimal pressure. Then, a managing valve stops the intake of outside air and allows for inside circulation between the tire and the tube chamber, back and forth.

Once the tire pressure falls below its optimal level, the managing valve disables internal air circulation and opens the intake of atmospheric air to activate the inflation again. The managing valve can be either electronic or purely mechanical. The tire pressure can be set during regular maintenance or even by the driver.

As a result, this simple solution ensures that all tires operate at optimal pressure at all times.

hahaha...good news for all ladies driver...change tireso easy for me..am not look for it...
anyway thank for sharing that great info with us...maybe expensive till shock everyone...

try poke 7inch nail to ur tire n see if this system would do any better.

Ok then better watch out for your set of rims if fitted with new tech tires...It will be hot peice of cake in underground world at least for beginning...

this system is not for serious tyre puncture. if not mistaken, in the last post, its just for those whose lazy to check their tyre pressure everyweek. frankly speaking, for thse who just know how to turn the key and vroom...

attention, wives!

What will happen if the air intake starts when the tire is submerged partially in water (malaysian potholes road/flash flood)?

that's a good point, i've tried googling for answers but have yet to find one yet

Same here.

Since its mechanical with no electronic, it cant differentiate between air and water

*worse, in Malaysia air=water hehehe
