sifu2 sekalian,
recently notice there's small rust underside of the front hood.
11 years old car so is expected but don't wanna let it go untreated.
any proper guide to fix it?
google it and kinda vague also just sand and prime it.
but also see a lot troublesome technique using heavy tools.
please help. :adore:

buy grade1000 sandpaper...sand it down with water until see the metal...

dry it with hair dryer and wipe with thinner before apply primer coat/paint

all using bare hand also no problem if the surface area small....

if it is a proton, it is very common whereby the 'glue' that they used previously was of sub-quality. This will make the joints rust (usually from inside-out). This is why you see 'bubbles' on the bonnets/doors/boots. The rust usually appears after 5 years (or maybe longer).

No way to cure this, as it will keep on appearing after time (may appear on other parts). Only permanent solution is to change that body part.

If it is not a proton, remove the rust using fine sand-paper. Spray anti-rust first (caution when using this, especially when there are expecting mothers nearby. read the label first) then paint.

Agree with pomen gtr. The key is to:

1. remove the rust
2. decontaminate the place
3. coat it so that it won't rust back.

So just wet sand it down a bit (be careful). Use 1000, then narrow down to 1500 grit. Never go lower than 800. The tinse with water. Then with some organic paint-safe solvet like ethyl-alcohol 70% or iso propyl alcohol. Try to avoid thinner as it might dissolve some paint. Avoid oil based solvents such as kerosene/petrol. When it is cleaned, just paint back the affected area with the same colour.

Googlw for rust remedy..but not sure if can find it here or not

1) Remove surface rust/scale, using sandpaper, or electric sander/grinder, if there is a large rust surface.
2) Apply rust killer ("Osphor", or similar rust retarding chemical). Wait for it to take effect and dry up.
3) Once Osphor converted remaining rust to inert substance, then sand-off the substance.
4) Apply paint. Note that osphor already etch the treated surface, so no need to apply primer or etching primer.

Apply more paint coat, if required. Better to have at least 2 coat of paint.

WD40 boleh ke?

just asking coz it works with well removing rust on other things..

WD40 can clean but not completely remove like sanding. From time to time cleaning it's okay.
