The thing is, what is your direction for this car in future? Are you planning to further drive it? Or letting go maybe in 3-4years?
For me to be in your shoe, if were to keep to car i would rebuilt them machine a level of satisfaction or at least restoring them a glory they used to have back in 90s. In fact i just did for my car and when i say to satisfied level. The cost is always a little more than allocated budget.
So plan your time and financial carefully since the car is functioning alright. For me i did not had the choice because i ran it to engine failure state.
And to do that, you need to know a reliable garage. Trustworthy, decent workmanship, delivery oriented as long as no payment delay. A reliable built could bring you what the engine suppose to perform from manufacture for at least 5years depending on how is the maintenance afterward.
