I'll be moving to KL quite soon and considering purchasing a car. The 350z is on my shortlist and I came on here to have a look and noticed the last post was 2 years ago.

Where is everyone?

One of the things I'll need to consider is availability of parts. What is the 350z like for these two?

Also, is there any guide on what to look for when buying one of these?

This car is not popular coz the road tax is too damn expensive (rm4.3k/yr). You know about this right?

Anyway what makes you want to buy this car in the first place?

350Z from what I heard is quite a reliable car. The only killer point about owning this car in Malaysia is the expensive roadtax. Other than that, I din't hear of much major issues. My relative owned one for like 8 years already. Well, tyres can be quite expensive due to its size.

To be honest, looking into maintenance is one of the requirements before owning any sports/performance car.

Actually, for car guys like us, this applies to every single car out there, hahahaha.

I limit to 2.0L only...hahhaha VR, Sonata, Tiggo and now forester still up to 2.0L only

Wow I didn't even think about road tax! That's quite a lot for a year!!

I considered it because its reasonably priced compared to other performance cars, it's naturally aspirated so more reliable than turbos or supercharged. However I may have to reconsider now

So how does the road tax work in Malaysia? Smaller the engine the less or to do with emissions?

So would a 2 litre turbo be less tax as I might have to consider that route.

What else should I consider? I thought parts availability would be the biggest constraint.

I'd like to stay within the 55-65k myr price band if possible. But would consider stretching if the car doesn't depreciate too much if at all.

What about the 200sx silvia?

Any other recommendations?

Why would a turbo be less reliable. Many new cars of all makes are going back to forced induction....lol

Provided you are always boosting to max then I would say they won't be reliable. My VR was transplanted 17 years ago, still with it....lol

Road Tax for 2.0L is below RM400, where the 350Z is RM4k....hahhaha

Yes you're right but let these cars get older, and then we'll assess how their whole life cost is and how reliable. Turbo cars simply have more things to go wrong, more parts pipes, hoses, intercooler turbos etc. But I am referring to older turbos of the past and I've owned a couple myself.

Yup, car the same, whether NA or turbo, follow the cc, but SUV same cc slightly higher, around RM50 more.

Yeah welcome to Malaysia, a country where the road tax rule is the dumbest I've ever seen! It's mostly just based on engine displacement, hence no matter how old or how cheap the car is, if it has a big engine, doesn't matter if NA or turbo or supercharged, then it suffers from ridiculously expensive road tax. The increase of the road tax is like exponential or more to the increase of engine displacement. So you said the 350z is cheap, well that's the reason why! If the road tax is not this dumb, 2nd hand bigger engine cars will not be as cheap in the first place. Normally those who own big engine cars are either very rich (hence can afford to pay those ridiculous road tax), or get the cars registered as company cars so their companies/businesses pay for the road tax.

So in here, if you want to own high performance cars without paying too expensive road tax, best is limit to 2.0 ltr but with turbo like Lancer Evos, Subaru WRXs, or Nissan Silvias.

Insurance now not sure coz just the beginning of this July already deregulated so will move towards those applied in developed countries. So expect for guys driving high performance cars will be hit hard as those will be categorized as the most risky drivers.

I mean for car guys, we tend to consider maintenance costs first for every kind of car before buying. Non car guys rarely think about maintenance cost until it happens.

Deregulate meaning can be cheaper also, like those without claims, but at the moment they themselves are not clear. Had to renew my insurance this month and is about the same. Wife ride have GPS tracking which many say can get some insurance discount but as mentioned they themselves not sure also, so GPS tracking or not, no change in premium....

It sounds like you're a foreigner and if you are, your insurance loading might be there and increase 10%-15%. Cars above the age of 7 years will have a loading as well. The older the car the higher the loading. Starts at 5%.

Then there's the issue of your NCB, where you store your car, any earlier claims, your age, your job, etc. They'll assess you based on all of this info. Basically just estimate 10%- 15% of your car value price for the insurance since you don't have any previous record with any insurance company. Also, it'll help to shop around and ask multiple companies for the best value. I like the service Etiqa gives but sometimes Tokio marine is cheaper and sometimes they don't charge loading depending on situation.

I changed 3 insurance already and all charge loading for my old car... Only time no loading was when wife's cousin works in insurance company insure for me.....lol
