alliance with the beleaguered Malaysian national car maker.

At 2.56 pm (0656 GMT), Proton was down 92 sen or 18.6 percent at 4.02

Proton shares plunge as VW, GM alliance talks end

(Bloomberg)
-- Proton Holdings Bhd., Malaysia's state-owned carmaker, plunged to a seven-year low in Kuala Lumpur trading after the government ended alliance talks with Volkswagen AG and General Motors Corp.

Proton slumped as much as 13 percent after Malaysia's state investment unit yesterday said it scrapped a year of talks to give the carmaker more time to reverse five quarters of losses. A strategic alliance can be considered later ``if necessary,'' the agency said in a statement.

``They don't have the resources to make it on their own,'' said Raymond Tang, who oversees $5.4 billion at CIMB-Principal Asset Management Bhd. in Kuala Lumpur. ``The company needs new technology from a partner.''

A turnaround now hinges on the company's ability to develop models and increase sales in overseas markets including China, Iran and Thailand. While sales in Malaysia for a new car rolled out in August beat company forecasts, that won't be sufficient for the 24-year-old automaker to go it alone, analysts said.

``Although management has done a commendable job at turning around the company, it probably won't be enough,'' said Vincent Khoo, head of research at Aseambankers Malaysia Bhd. in Kuala Lumpur. Proton still needs a partner, he said.

Proton today fell as much as 62 sen to 4.32 ringgit and traded at 4.36 ringgit at 2:24 p.m. local time, set for the lowest close since Nov. 29, 2000. The shares have slumped 34 percent this year, giving the company a market value of 2.39 billion ringgit ($707 million).

`Poor Brand'

Proton lost 589.5 million ringgit last fiscal year. The search for a partner followed the end of an alliance with Mitsubishi Motors Corp. in 2004, and the loss of half of Proton's market share to rivals such as Toyota Motor Corp.

``Proton lacks global competitiveness as it has a poor brand image, has no real global presence to speak of and lacks the necessary technology to compete,'' Sharifah Farah, an analyst at CIMB Investment Bank Bhd. in Kuala Lumpur with an ``underperform'' rating on the stock, wrote in a report today.

Still, the new Persona sedan, introduced in August, notched up 22,000 bookings by the end of October, Malaysian Second Finance Minister Nor Mohamed Yakcop told reporters late yesterday. Proton, which planned to sell 4,000 of the vehicles a month, may report a profit in 2009, Nor said.

``We must give Proton management the flexibility to move on and carry out its turnaround plan,'' Nor said. ``We are not saying there will be no strategic partnership. It's a very attractive idea, but we also have to look at the interest of the country.''

Manufacturing Emblem

Protons, driven by taxi drivers across Malaysia, are among the cheapest cars on offer in the Southeast Asian nation. The carmaker was set up in 1983 by then-Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad as a manufacturing emblem. The Saga saloon is still on sale more than two decades after the first model was produced.

General Motors is still interested in Proton, Rob Leggat, a spokesman for the Detroit-based carmaker, said yesterday in an e- mailed response to questions.

Proton's turnaround plan includes offering all its models in Thailand by the end of November, Nor said yesterday. Proton aims to sell cars in India and to double exports this year and next, it said in September. The carmaker in July agreed with Jinhua Youngman Automobile Manufacturing Co. to sell cars in China.

``Proton respects the decision made by the government,'' Zainal Abidin Syed Mohd Tahir, managing director of the Shah Alam, Malaysia-based company, said in a statement. ``We will continue to work harder and introduce new models.''

Old Talks

The Persona, which was Proton's first new car in more than a year, may help the automaker return to profit as early as 2009, analysts at Hwang-DBS Vickers Research Sdn. said in August.

The Malaysian government controls Proton though a 43 percent stake held by Khazanah Nasional Bhd., Malaysia's state-owned investment unit.

Proton and Volkswagen jointly ended the talks, the Wolfsburg, Germany-based company said yesterday. Initial negotiations between the two companies collapsed in January last year after the parties failed to agree on terms, including control of the maker of Waja and Wira sedans.

The German automaker will now expand its sales and service network in Southeast Asia, in particular within Malaysia, it said in a statement. A partnership with Proton offered Volkswagen access to a regional manufacturing site.

There could be a lot of $$$ issue inside the corp which they will never wants people to know....just like MAS,....those purchasing or sourcing involve a lot of surprising figures which can stunt the world....I guess this is one of the reason that they insist no other can send in their man in the management except their own people. They are just wanna cover up their mess and maybe continue their craps.....spending money into those unpractical projects like religious car without much religious feature.

Having positive performance? its just 1 quarter and they said they are recovering? their main market here still having low market share, export to iran is not permanent...and other "plans" is still not signed any contract to confirm.

so they are dreaming of getting people invest large sum of money and transfer them the technology without letting the investor have a say in the company? Thats the funniest business if realy have the investor willing to do it , other than our gomen.

God bless them, and the EPF of the msians.........

maybe they dont want "outsiders" (ie VW/GM) to open cans-of-worms in P1, when we all know a lot of purchasing or sourcing were done by cronies.

outsiders wont gif face (transparency) & our current G can do with less "exposes".

PM said he is confident of protons turn around, of course, if I had your money to play around with I would say the same thing wouldnt I ?

Belif me,Proton won't die even ppl cancel the all Persona models.Govt will find ways saving Proton asses.Guys, don't always think Proton produced low quality cars.Satris GTi not bad wat...:proud:

Yesssss...:proud:...Putra oso...hehehe
Perdana got its look..., Ermmm...Proton wont die, the one who die is us...
Gomen will support & subsidize Proton with our money...hehehe...believe me...

Proton makes pretty good car since the GTi, actually after they bought a certain portion of Lotus. I think the Waja are technically pretty good especially the chassis and handling. Steering were nice but the transmission is alittle too lazy instead ... 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear ratio is nicely packed together. I think the newer Perdana has improved much too ...

The only thing with Proton is, the Quality SUXS, and SUXS BIG TIME ...

The Tiara ... hahaha ... I had one too (almost all the Proton models I had once :banghead:) but the Tiara has pretty good power. The things suxs with the Tiara is the lobe-sided gas pedal (almost to where the brake is), humangously heavy steering (too much positive castor, I think) minus power steering, no water temp guage except a light comes on when you are about or had cooked the engine ... At least I never had a problem with the power-window ... And by the way, it took me and my friend almost 15 minutes to find where the honk button is ... That was hillarious ... :hmmmm:

As for the Juara, if you gonna get this car, make sure you order a set of the Power Ranger costume 1st .... hahahahaha .... POWER RANGER ! :burnout: :burnout: :burnout:

I drove the latest golf gti and passat turbo before.....VW did make really good cars. the engine, transmission and chassic works excellently. The DSG is really a fun toy to play with.

well, since VW will start to build their distribution in msia, lets see what they can offer....but with crappy gomen protected firm like poton...the price should have hard ground to lower for foreigner player like VW...current price for Golf GTI is a bit pricey in msia....HK is selling nearly 50% cheaper for a brand new Golf gti...
