MMER 2010: Video of Team Empire Motorsports Lotus 2 Eleven catching fire

A video of the fire that effectively ended Team Empire Motorsports hope of finishing the 2010 Merdeka Millennium Endurance Race. It's just a part of the video as we were seated in the media room when it happened. Just something to give you a scale of things. Team driver Asyraff Dewal is now in hospital together with another pit member. Our thoughts go out to them.

Fire was allegedly caused by spilled fuel during refuelling.. And suspected that some spilled fuel came in contact with the super hot exhaust and then all the spilled fuel went up in flame in a flash and from where i was sitting at the pitwall, it looked like a 2 storey high ball of fire... Straight out from the movie... And then the driver with helmet and full racing suit was on fire, running and jumping away from the blaze...

I overheard at the race registration centre that there were 7 ppl injured with various degree of burn injuries based on the medical reports... Hope that they will recover soon...

Another video.. See how the fire restarted from the remaining spilled fuel underneath the car...

And if you're observant enuf, you'll see that one of the guys remove the fuel rig(or whatever u called that) from the car and the hose was detached... It sort of confirmed the initial 'rumour' that the fuel hose came off the fuel rig during refueling. Maybe car stopped too far away from the fuel rig or the hose was a little too short and didn't have enuf slack. And it came loose and splashed fuel all over the place and then the fire started....

his name is Jordan Saw, one of the pit crew member...He's currently under forced sedation due to the extent of his injuries and will be undergoing surgery today..please pray for him..for speedy recovery.

First of all, let's not speculate if there was any failure on any part of the rig. I am sure in due time, SIC will come up with changes in their safety regulations to ensure such fires do not happen again.

To not also discredit this team - I saw 2 other fires that race, all from International Teams....one Audi and one Porsche. They were minor ones but still fire.

Our thots and prayers goes to a fellow crew of the race team. Yes, he is a friend of my drivers....

Speedy recovery to Jordan and all injured.

Saw another photo somewhere which showed that the single male rig socket removed in the video was actually the breather... Refueling was done on the left side off the car (the far side) and the breather is on the right (the near side)... So the initial speculation, immediately after the fire, that the hose came off the rig was not true. But it might have prompted other teams to closely inspect their own fuel rig..

However, the fact was that there is enuf fuel underneath the car to cause the initial big fire and also the 2nd smaller fire.. I'm sure all the teams are interested to know the findings in order to prevent a recurrence..

At the meantime, all the best to those injured during the fire to have a speedy recovery...

Any updates on Jordan and also Wan?

Hope they are truly on their way to full recovery. ( physical and mentally too )
