It’s time to take a minute and be grateful for all things out of Munich as BMW has shined the production green light on the Vision Efficient Dynamics (VED) concept.

The world first laid eyes on it back in 2009 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and the subsequent overwhelming response has prompted BMW to make the jump from prototype to production for the people that are willing to shell out the estimated $200,000 for a road legal version.

Since the concept already contained a number of complete or virtually production-ready components, BMW will be giving out media test drives on a road-ready technology showcase platform based on the VED.

Since the VED contained a fair bit of "completely or virtually production-ready components," BMW is confidently giving out media test drives at the Leipzig trade fair center of a road-ready technology showcase vehicle based on the VED.

Final production specs could differ from the prototype but just to recap, the VED concept had a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo diesel engine with a hybrid synchronous motor at the front axle and a full hybrid engine at the rear axle for a combined power output of 328hp.

The century dash would be dealt with in the four second range, aided by the generous amounts of carbon fiber used in the body. All-wheel drive would be the norm with an electric motor on each axle but a rear-wheel drive version is on the cards, which could very well be solely electric-powered.

Consumption figures would have to be as impressive as the performance figures and the VED doesn’t disappoint. The VED can achieve 3.76-liters of fuel per 100km, wiping the floor with the poster child of green cars, the Toyota Prius.

Moe importantly, the production version of the VED will feature plug-in capability, expanding the power options for the car with a 50km range on pure electric power stored in the lithium-polymer battery.
