Mazda has been known to produce some of the better looking cars out of Japan and their last design concept was definitely headed in that direction too. The brand has however unveiled a new four-door coupe concept design that shines a light on the future of the brand’s new design language.

Dubbed the Shinari, the concept displays the new front end design that will spawn the business end of all new Mazda vehicles.

While the previous flowing and fluidic Nagare design was a thing of beauty, it proved hard to implement on a production basis. The Shinari, while devoid of strong lines and flowing creases, is however closer to a production design.

The term ‘KODO’ has been used to describe the Shinari’s new lines and it translates from Japanese into ‘soul and emotion.’ It’s a joint effort between the brand’s design studios from Japan, America and Germany.

The Shinari’s silhouette projects a very premium feel and that is exactly the point the brand’s aiming for. It does seem to mirror an Aston Martin Rapide from the sides or even a Fisker Karma but yet again, park an RX-8 next to it and you could still see the similarities.

“We want to play in the same group as BMW and Audi. On fit and finish we want the same level of quality,” said Derek Jenkins, Director of Design for Mazda North America.

The concept will make its first public appearance at the upcoming Paris Motor Show later this month.
