Hi guyss,

Thought I'd share this with you. I had my gear oil changed about 1k km ago. It was Redline 75W90 GL-5 gear oil with a tube of lubeguard or something like that. After that I noticed that my gear shift was not as smooth as before. It has a very slight crunchy feeling in the mornings and at high revs. I thought it was normal until I did a bit of reading-up.

Apparently, the GTT's gear box and most jap make cars takes GL-4 rated gear oil instread of GL-5. So I got my gear oil changed again today to Redline's MT-90 (75W90 GL-4) and immediately noticed the difference in the gear shift feel. Gear goes in smoothly. No more funny crunchy feeling but a whole lot poorer :dong:

So guys, the next time you do an oil change at the transmission, try using the GL-4 rated oils instead of the GL-5s. Was at eneos last night and to my suprise, the do not carry any GL-4 gear oils. The closest match was the Motul ones whereby they say its compatible with both GL-4 & GL-5 & some other specificiations. Didn't want to risk it plus gear oils aren't exactly cheap.

In my previous ride, a P. V6, it was very sensitive to the gear oil used. It will only take ATF-SPIII and not Dextron III. I had one time put in Dextron II by accident and the gear change was jerky. flushed the system and reverted to ATF-SPIII, everything went back smoothly.

cheers !

Thanks for the tip. Was just thinking about gear oil change earlier today. How much did you pay for the Redline MT-90 GL-4s oil ?

Mt-90

Got it off N1 for RM55 per litre. Called the distributor, Cybertech..got them to deliver to N1. N1 only stocked the 75W90 GL-5 & MTL (70W80 GL-4) which is too thin. Didn't put any lubeguard mumbo jumbo. Read somewhere that they apparently breaks down at high temperature which renders it useless.

Oh and by draining the gear oil and re-filling it again, it will use approximately 3.5 litres.

I just change to Redline 75W90 GL-5 and found it troublesome, when i go high rev i can't change it to second gear and end up moving it up to 3rd or need to do some free revving then only manage to get into 2nd gear.

Seem like this GL-5 oil doesn't work well with our gearbox.

V-Spec - how is your gear changing with Q8?

Initially it was a bit knot-chy on cold morning shifts. After it warms up it's allright. Nowadays after running it in for a good couple of thousand Ks, it's allright on shifts even on the first shift into 1st on mornings.

I checked the recommended manual transmission fluid by Nissan for the GTT. We are supposed to use Nissan Gear Oil MP-G Special GL-4 75W-90.

so is there any Nissan Gear Oil MP-G Special GL-4 in town?

maybe we can check with Nissan service center heheh

Redline 75W-90 (GL-5) is for LSD. Never use it for a manual transmission. The oil is too thin and slippery for manual transmissions. MT-90 is the one for manual transmission.
I know Nissan imports Matric D ATF, made by Idemitsu Japan. Dont know is there any for manual transmissions.

Just found out from Redline website. MT90 is specially made for Nissan, Toyota and Mazda manual transmissions. MTL is popular in BMW and Honda manual transmissions.
Always read the back label before applying.

Redline

I too noticed the 75W90 GL-5 was very thin when I drained it out. The MT-90 was thicker and brownish in color. The 75W90 GL-5 was red in color.

Guess i need to change mine when i come back to kl... i rather spend some little money to change then changing the gear box hehehe

what about diff oils?wat oil to use? front & rear drive using different fliuds?

Diff Oil

Diff oils to be used are the GL-5 80W-90 or 80W140 (if you are paranoid). But our LSD are hellical and does not have the plates, so I think the 80W90 are good enough. 80W-90 ar the common normal gear oil used in the wira, etc.

so which mean we can use the redline GL-5 gear oil for our Differential?

Update

Just an update. After 1 week of the oil change, the gears go in even smoother. Perhaps it took some time for the GL-4 to overwhelm the existing small portion of the GL-5 left in the tranny. Feel so much better up & downshifting.

tht's kewl man. i think we saw u at melor last sat nite. was it u? hehe...

i have change to Redline's MT-90 GL-4 few weeks back and it is running very smooth now comparing to the Redline 75W90 GL-5 which many times i can't get my gear engage and most of the time that i feel the gear when i change.
