Honda+toyota=madness..

I don't think it is pointless... I've heard a couple of Lotus Elise owners in UK who swapped out the stock engine with a K20A from Honda. Now, that's stealth...
Would you still think the same if the Elise owner swapped a big V8 under the bonnet? Wouldn't be an Elise anymore, would it?

That's my point, losing the identity, the point of the original vehicle.

Giving a bit more go, like the Elise example you gave, doesn't really spoil the car. Furthermore, the engine isn't part of the Elise's identity (as long as its still a buzzing little 4 pot) unlike say the engine of a Ferrari is to its identity and therefore changing a Ferrari's heart is akin to seriously fucking up the car ie pointless.

When the car becomes a Frankenstein, like said S2K cum Supra cum Silvia, it doesn't know what it is anymore. Might as well have done it on a washing machine.

yes i do agree there..some of the engine swaps i just dont get em...i have no probs with adding performance parts to the current engine...

but still some of them are real monsters...i think the ulitmate swap was the slk with the SLR engine...

One word. WOW! I want one of these beast. I can pee in my pants with that kind of torque...

prior to launching the elise 111, lotus had done their RESEARCH on the suitabilities of using Toyota's 2ZZ 1.8 engine (also in Altis)

same goes to car kit manufacturer like Caterham or West. they may have had thousand's of calculations before selling their products, things like weight distribution, power-to-weight ratio...even engine mounting points!!

the key word here is R.E.S.E.A.R.C.H

and not about speed alone.

and that makes the difference between the dumb and the clever.

zan..ur are rite about cars like caterhams...and even lotus's since they dont manufactur engine any more...
Definetely a lot of research goes into these things as they want better handling through lower centre of gravity..they want lighter engines..small things here and there produce an overall difference to the cars handling and wat not..
Well i was talking mostly about People who go about transplating different things in absurd cars...when it comes to car manufacturers..its a different story..like u have pointed out..

I think these people want POWER! They probably think the S2k is a good enough handling car but it can't keep up with a Skyline on the Sepang straights and they think a little more weight isn't going to hurt the handling much. Compromise a bit on the weight for a much more powerful engine.

the wonderful 50:50 weight ratio gone for sure, what a waste.
I don't think this is a great move.

the great handling and all other great stuff oa of S2000 is gone with that heavy engine.

IMO, if engine transplant is carried out.. the challenge is not there anymore.. you dont have the experience of modding it and squeezing every bit off BHP out of your own engine.. engine transplanting is the last and final resort to give the most power for your car.. but still, the fun of modding is by having the car and the engine THAT comes with the car and modding it with performance parts..

correct me if i'm wrong... :_:

bushidofang, doesn't really agree with your thought

The challenge is to fit the engine inside the chasis and yet doesn't weaken the chasis or even giving extra load to the car.
Somemore, u have to make sure that every little thing works. Which of course involves alot of investingating and research.
Anyway, every tiny bit has to fit nicely thus the car doesn't go uncontrolleble which is also a neat challenge for anyone wild enuf to do it.

b00n: yeah.. its just IMO.. i mean the challenge of getting BHP out of a stock engine.. means no fun ledi... engine transplanting for me is the last thing.. but its just my opinion lar.. everyone has a diff opinion rite.. anyway, well said b00n.
