***i had this in the wrong section before...take two***

Hi all,

I am not so active on your forums but i have looked here from time to time. I am from Australia but i have a lot of friends who are from KL. I have come up to KL quite a few times over the past few years as i love the country and the atmosphere.

Anyway, I am looking into moving up there and i would like to take one of my cars up with me at some point. Now i think the problem is that they are both R32 GTR (one is street registered the other is being built as a track car). I dont really know how your import system works. From what i am told i can bring it up with me and get it registered (which will cost me a bomb) but i will have to take it back with me when i eventually leave. Am i able to bring a car in and not get it registered and just use for track purposes?

If anyone can steer me in the right direction it would help me out a lot. Thanks

Glenn

Howdy mate,

From memory, all imported cars get hit with a 300% tax on their market value. There is also a way to import a car and use it purely for the track. As long as it is never registered, you won't be hit with that 300% tax.

Basically, if you want to import your car into Malaysia to register it and drive it, be prepared to pay through the arse for it.

So you really have to think if it worth it or not in the long run.

Hope that helps,
Oz

of course unless you come in to Malaysia via MM2H(malaysia my 2nd home program), then you can bring one registered car tax-free.

A participant of the Program is allowed to import a car tax-free as a personal belonging from his country of origin or purchase one here free of sales tax. This means you will get a car cheaper than a Malaysian.

In order to qualify for the tax exemptions, you would have to:

a) Import a car from your home country/last country of domicile within 6 months from the approval of the Program.

While with the MM2H you can bring in a car tax free, the MM2H programs means that you can't work or get a job. It's essentially a retirement program. Doesn't stop you from buying investment properties and the such though.

thanks for the info. i dont think i would qualify for that program anyway, dont have THAT much in my bank account haha

i was thinking i'd rather just bring it over as a track car....i cant imagine driving with a heavy twin plate during peak hour! besides i can always use my girlfriends car.

so will i have to pay any sort of tax to import it as a track car? are there any companies that you guys could recommend if i were to go down that path? cheers

From memory, for track cars, you only have to pay the usual import and duty tax. Just not that stupid 300% tax.

As for companies, try getting in contact with some shipping companies in Australia to get an idea of how much you would be expected to pay. The last time I looked into shipping a car to Malaysia, it was going to cost around AUD$10k-15k to have it shipped to Port Klang. That price I'm pretty sure included the usual import and duty tax.

Best thing to do is do some research and start to get some quotes and also try and find out how much you can be expected to pay on arrival in Malaysia.

Cheers,
Oz
