Nissan GT-R Prototype Complete Information

Nissan GT-R Proto Press Release

At the 35th Tokyo Motor Show in 2001, Nissan unveiled the GT-R Concept, confirming that the GT-R legend would be continued into the 21st century. Then, at the 37th Tokyo Motor Show in 2003, Nissan announced the next-generation GT-R would be rolled out in 2007. Now with the launch of the production model just two years away, the development of the new GT-R has moved ahead again with the reveal of the GT-R PROTO.

Ultimate driving pleasure

In essence, driving pleasure means that a car responds faithfully to the driver’s wishes and performs precisely as expected. Successive generations of the GT-R have consistently pursued this vision of ultimate driving pleasure. Whether on the road or the racetrack, the GT-R has always represented ultimate performance combined with handling qualities that stay faithful to the driver’s wishes, in all conditions. As a result, the GT-R has built a reputation that extends far beyond just its loyal owner base.

Exterior design: pure performance

The design of the GT-R PROTO expresses pure GT-R heritage, coming from the first model PGC10 (1969) through R34 (1999), in a new and expressive form.

From its original roots as a pure-bred Japanese performance car, the new GT-R will now be a car sold globally, recognizing its ability to compete with the very best in the world. For the first time in its history, the new GT-R will be designed as a specific body-style, and not derived from a sedan.

The design language of the GTR Proto is expressed by a distinctive body-style that communicates pure performance and functionality. The form of the GT-R PROTO instantly expresses its purpose and potential, but in a way that is unique to this iconic car.

At the front end, the single center air intake is designed to optimize airflow and to strongly link the identity of the GT-R from R34 to GT-R Concept (2001). Front fenders are uniquely designed through intensive analysis of the airflow around the tires and the air vent behind the front fender also optimizes aerodynamics. The sides of the body are sculptured towards the rear fender, expressing the power and dynamic tension of the car.

The overall shape of the body combines solid and smooth surfaces to achieve the look of a well-trained athlete. The unique C-pillar crease is designed for optimum aerodynamics, reflecting the racing DNA of the GT-R.

The rear of the GTR Proto is strong and well defined. The signature four ring-shaped tail lamps provide an immediate visual link to Previous GT-R models. Four large-bore exhaust pipes complete the purposeful look, which could only be that of a pure GT-R.

The GT-R Proto provides for the first time a clear indication of the final design direction for the production model to be launched in 2007, the first all-new GT-R in eight years.

Nissan GT-R Proto Coverage

Shiro Nakamura, head of design at Nissan Motor, says the company's breathtaking GT-R Proto concept, unveiled Wednesday at the auto show here, is "80 to 90 percent" close to the vehicle design that will be produced in 2007.

While the nose of the GT-R Proto is more conceptual in nature, Nakamura said the car's greenhouse, side profile and rear end, especially the retro-style round taillamps, are "very close" to the final design.

Carlos Tavares, Nissan's executive vice president of product planning, wouldn't reveal many more details of the next-generation GT-R.

"There are a lot of expectations," he said. "We don't want to disappoint our fans."

Tavares no doubt was referring to the hordes of enthusiasts who've begged Nissan over the years to market its legendary Skyline GT-R away from home. The new GT-R will be the first in the series to be exported to other markets. The car will be launched in Japan and will go on sale soon afterward in Europe and North America, Tavares said.

The GT-R will have the same powertrain in all markets, he said. Sources tell Inside Line that Nissan is considering a twin-turbocharged, 3.7-liter V6 that produces about 450 horsepower and drives all four wheels through a seven-speed sequential gearbox.

The production version of the GT-R is expected to debut at the 2007 Tokyo show.

What this means to you: Hungry fans of the Nissan GT-R will have to wait two more years to test-drive the first production model.

The Nissan GT-R Proto was a concept car first unveiled by Nissan at the 2001Tokyo Motor Show. Since then, it had been redesigned, and a newer version made its debut at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show. The GT-R is the first to be released since the demise of the Skyline GT-R. The exact specifications are unknown, it is highly probable that the vehicle will have a twin-turbocharged, 3.7-liter V6 that produces about 450 horsepower and drives all four wheels through a seven-speed sequential gearbox. Also, Nissan claims that the production vehicle will be 80-90% similar to the GT-R Proto. They said that most of the changes for the final production model would be to the front, such as replacing the carbon fiber and possibly the headlights as well.

Nissan plans for the release of the car in late 2007 in Japan and Spring 2008 for North America.

Wow great compilation! From the sides it actually look really good! Really glad to hear that the final model will have revised front end cause now it just doesn't look aggressive enough.

In the picture Prototype GT-R front and rear Brake caliper is using 6 pot....what about the final design ...for end user is it the same 6 pot caliper?

RB series will still remain as the best Japanese engine due to made of iron .. ability of producing a 500ps with only ECU tuning is a remarkable ones ..

Lets see wat the GT-R Proto's engine made of ..

my favourite selection will still be the R33 GT-R VSpec ..

Yes but it won't be in production anymore, maybe in small numbers by Nismo for tuners. But one thing for sure, tuners will be using it for years to come.

Lol those Japs only limit their HP cause of the gentleman's agreement. If not, skylines and supras would have 500hp stock!

Possible that the GT-R Proto's engine's made out of aluminium?

Not sure about the proto engine, even the specifications are not out yet, including the transmission.

Heard rumours tat new GT-R Proto will not be a Skyline family .. but it has its own individual GT-R badge, means .. its the first GT-R without the SKYLINE tag. Its Nissan GT-R and not Nissan Skyline GT-R.

R32.R33.R34's will be strong for about 10yrs from now and no one could shake their pole position in motoring.

Not forgetting legendary NSX, Supra & RX-7's ..

from what i read from edmunds.com/insideline...

the new nissan GTR proto will got a new chasis, it will be lighter... theres even rumours that lotus was brought in to help wif the diet..

and the 450horse, large 3.7 v6 twin turbo engine was made so that the new proto can compete with chevrolete corvette z06 and the porche 911 turbo... u can see the 911 on the 1st video

the new proto also will be in the skyline family...
