128kbit is normal cd quality, diff software used diff sound quality. Anything above 128kbit is considered oversampling, the quality is sure better than 128, but sometimes it will become 'unreal'. 2 software that I used so far is Creative and Musicmatch Jukebox. This 2 programs can give a good sound if compare to others. But compare to original CD still mp3 will be the loser. So the best is rip it between 192 or 256, it will be the best.
As some of us might be downloading mps from Internet(illegal) the quality will be 96 or 128, very rare to get 192 or higher due to file size is bigger. Some people might think convert 128 to 192 then will get better quality, this is not true, as video, picture and songs can be downgraded but cannot be upgraded, if can also it will be minimum.

as i know oversampling are only happen when u convert a low bit rate file to a high bit rate file..convert of cd to mp3 in 192/256/320 is not called oversampling..because the source(wav) bit rate are still greater than the mp3...oversampling only happen when u convert 128 mp3 to anythiing higher than 128...u can hear some clipping of the nodes.every frequency got it's clip..just whether the music are performing it's full volumn of the particular freq and whether u can sense it or not..the most easy way to know a clipping is the high node..

Well, if you have older versions of Musicmatch Jukebox, then you can see the word oversampling on the recording options when set at 128 and higher. So far I have record few settings 128, 192, 256, 320. And I got 1 conclusion, 192 will be the best in term of quality and file size(compare between mp3, not ori CD). maybe normal music we cannot hear much diff on the quality, but if you got original Micheal Jackson's song(Billy Jean and other popular songs), then you can hear the diff between them. At 320 you can hear abit unreal. 192 and 256 more or less the same. But when convert it back to CD, 192 and 256 got vocal, but the bass is something come out from a 6X9, not from a sub or drum. 320 still same, unreal and the bass same as 192 and 256.
With most of the technology of the softwares, the clipping we almost cannot hear it even with high volume. Maybe at that time is our HU or speakers start to clip, not the song.
