Hi guys, i'm kinda new in this... I need some expert opinion on this

I'm currenly using Kenwood 129. 500watts x 2 MTX replica amp to power 1 MTX RT 12" sub. Front and rear components powered by my HU. I might be upgrading my HU to Pioneer 6850.

Question is: should i upgrade my amp to 4ch to power my sub + front components OR get another 2ch amp to power my front components??

Due to budget constrain, either i upgrade to 4ch amp or Pioneer 6850.

Is there a need to get a crossover for my MTX sub and preamp??

Best Regards

1.Why do u want to upgrade the amp? Do u have any problem? Is it loudness problem?

2. I've heard a good & reasonable setup for average user (IMHO serious = hardcore where money is not a question) using Pioneer 4650 & 2-channel amp bridged to power two Kicker CompVR 12" subs. The HU powers up a pair of Kenwood coax. speakers.
IMHO good sound and may sound better than some ppl with comp. sets.

if you are on a tight budget, consider which is the weakest 1st. If it is bass, see if ur sub need more power or better box.
If it is comp. set not loud enough before going into distortion then get an amp for it.

4-channel or 2-channel amp will depend on how you want to run your setup. 2-channel amp is cheaper than 4-channel amp (of similar power) but you get less flexibility for future upgrade.

u need crossover if you do not have one at the moment. If you do have low pass filter for the sub then no need to add one. If you do not have, get one.

pre-amp? u mean 5-band parametric equaliser? If u have the need to tweak then buy it. Generally for me, i dont need one.

The reason why i wanna upgrade my amp to 4ch is because i dont really like the idea of installing 2 amps (1 for sub another for front). 4ch i can drive my sub + front speakers. Now i feel there's an imbalance because my front and rear speakers are driven by my Kenwood HU (45watts mosfet) which i think is not enough. although there's no distortion at high volume but just not clear enough

The thing is my Kenwood HU only have 1 rear RCA out. So i wonder how can i hook up to a 4ch amp. Thats why i intend to upgrade my HU to pioneer 6850 first. I'm not sure...

My amp settings: bass set to middle, treble set to minimum, gain set to middle and swithed to sub mode (normal/sub). so do i still need a low pass filter or crossover since i already set my amp to sub mode? I dont have either one... so which one should i get?

The HU might only generate around 22Watt RMS. So, that's probably the reason why the feeling of imbalance.
The one preout on the HU can be settled with a Y-Cable. My Opinion, since you're getting a 4 CH amp. You can still use the 2 CH one for your sub. The 4 CH can be used to power the comps. However, this setting require that you have an electronic crossover, unless the 4 CH amp has a Bypass or pass through RCA connection.

then get 4-channel amp of your choice but it will be expensive to give the required power for your sub.

if your HU has one RCA pre-out, this is not a good reason to upgrade the HU. You can use RCA Y-splitter where it split one into two pairs. Or look for 4-channel amp that has in-built splitter eg. Kenwood amp.

bass middle, treble min etc. is your amp in-built 2-band equaliser.
normal/sub mode is your amp in-built non-variable low pass filter.
if u intend to use your current amp for the sub then no need to get external crossover unless you want to use it for your component set or you want to vary your low pass filter cut-off.

Thanks Kippo and cacin for your expert advice :)

Main reason i wanna upgrade my HU is bcuz it cant read many of my ori disc but not much problem reading my pirated or burn cds... damn it! i only use it slightly more than a year. less than a year already discovered the problem. unless i can send to somewhere for repair with minimal cost?

so now is it recomended to change my amp to 4ch or to get another 2ch amp for my front? rear speakers i may wanna leave it as i wanna concentrate on the front comp.

btw, my amp does not have a built-in eq. it has bass/treble/gain(volume)

better to get rid if the replica amp and the old Hu for a new HU with more than 1 pre out and a good 4 ch amp to drive the front & sub. use the HU power to drive the rears.
