the housing is wrapped so i cant see...if i measure it how big should the diameter be for a t04r?

Uh oh, just did a check and I am mistaken. They stamp the AR on the housing. I have no idea how you find out the trim unless you bought it that way. Will let you know if I find out.

Trim refers to the relationship between inducer of the compressor wheel against the exducer of the turbine wheel.

Your life would be easier if you had a Garrett turbo coz you can calculate the trim from the 4 digits.

any one know how much horse a T04E is capable of? and it is a good turbo?

400, 460 and 490hp depending on the trim - 54mm, 57mm and 60mm respectively.

As for whether it is a good turbo, it really depends on your application. If you stick a big turbo on a small engine and get no boost, will you say that the turbo is bad?

I bought the car abt 3 months back, came with the single conversion..done by the 2nd owner so even the person i bought it from doesn't know...some ppl are saying its a to4r while others t04e but i have no idea...maybe i should just ask the previous mechanics...

The 2nd previous owner bought the turbo kit from a member in Melaka. Confirmed is TO4R.

Do you really need all that power? I think you would be able to get 400HP flywheel at 1bar for a rotary with the usual mods.

I don't need that much power but 400+ would be nice. Right now I'm only running slightly above 300 at 0.8 bar. Will there be any issues with running that low boost? I have a boost controller which i can set to 1 bar, it that any different to having it re tuned to 1 bar?

Uhm... how to explain. There are no issues running low boost pressure. It just means that the turbo spools earlier and power comes on quicker - depending on setup. It also means less power.

The higher the boost pressure, the longer the turbo needs to spool up - which is "turbo lag". Newer turbos dont have as much lag.

Turbos are rated for a certain amount of power depending on settings. I dont really know how to simplify the concept but smaller turbos spool faster but has lower max power output. So, the small turbo will spool by 2-3000rpm and produce peak power between 4-6000rpm but then cannot sustain max boost above that rpm range. The boost meter would show that the pressure actually drops in some setups.

Bigger turbos take longer to spool but has higher power max output. So it would produce peak power between 5-7000 rpms but it will lag like heck below 2-3000rpm because there isnt enough gas to spin the turbine - this is what we call the "boost threshold".

If you turn it up to 1 bar, you will have additional power with a little bit more lag. You could hit 400HP but you're going to need mods.

Assuming that 300 RWHP, it means that the flywheel is producing 375HP - with 20% loss at the wheel. That's pretty close to 400HP at the flywheel. Doesnt sound any problem to hit 400HP at the flywheel at 1 bar then.

i know its 300 because the previous owner tuned it down to 300 (previously it was tuned to around 460 by the owner before him, but i don't know at how much boost)..so i would guess that would mean 300 on the dyno...which would mean more on the fly wheel right?

Unless you got a dyno slip, you may want to verify with a proper dyno test. Dyno usually means wheel horsepower.

There is no harm running 0.8 bar. You would have problem running on more than 1 bar without proper maintenance. Just ensure proper cooling.

Who to tune? Go to Ah Choy. He apparently is going to be a PowerFC expert soon.

I hear there are a few FDs who are running above 1 bar regularly without problem.

Ah Choy recommends running below 1 bar except for short periods just for safety.

I recommend you to run the power you can handle and no more.

Forgot to mention, the problem with running high pressure is the danger of detonation / knock and the high amount of stress placed on engine parts. Especially in our hot climate, high pressure is just not recommended unless you found some place to buy methanol on the cheap.

Supras and Skylines R32-34 can run high boost because their engines are all iron engines. The supra engine is forged as well and can take a damn lot of punishment - hence the small ECU tweak to get 550HP on stock internals. But no engine is bullet-proof against idiotic carelessness.

fc3s stock is Single... so... you're fine with it... it's a small single.. thus easy to drive..
