Dead Fairlady Gearbox - HELP!!!

3 months ago I was not able to engage into gear on my auto trans. of my 300zx. After shifting into D or R there was no response as the gear was 'slipping'. I subsequently bought a halfcut and the gearbox was replaced. Last week the same problem arosed. I'm really going crazy!! Any technical advise? HELP!!!

Check n see if the GB is leaking any ATF? If so, it could be the seals.

There is no ATF leaks on the gearbox n the gearbox was even flushed n new ATF was filled. My mechanic opened up the old gearbox n found that the clutch plates n gaskets were worned n damaged.

In that case, just do an overhaul of the entire GB. I believe Exedy do sell an overhaul kit which any mech can install.

Exedy only makes clutches for manual gearboxes. There are some ppl who can 're-build' your old clutch plates in Ipoh. Sorry no contact. I have 'heard' that they have rebuilt manual clutches only.

You can order the re-build kit from TCM. Try Jln Cheras TCM, talk to the manager. He is a malay man. Nice guy. Please don't talk to the wrong person.

Worst case scenario......send the g/box to those workshops that only do auto trans rebuilds and cross your fingers.

What other problems did you have with your car?.

Actually, they do make A/T rebuilt kits as well. I bought one for my W4A33 (VR4 AWD A/T) last week.

just wanna change from auto to manual. so far the 300zx has been great

You should look up Mike Kojima's pearl 300ZX. It is a feature car in Sports Compact Car magazine. Completely worked over car.

300zx sure is a magnet. i suppose if you're a z fanatic like myself, you
will not be bothered by the road tax and high fuel consumption.
GTO is a great car but way too heavy and spare parts are limited.
both are fun to drive anyway.

It is sacrilegious to compare GTO witn 300zx. GTO engine/chasis is weak. The 300 was popularly compared with Supra, dude.

300zx, supra, GTO, Rx7 and NSX were once considered the fab five of jap super sportscars.. i suppose any of these has its own strengths and weaknesses. i wonder which is better, 300zx or supra.

Supra has better aftermarket support and stronger bottom end.
GTO really has more weakne$$eS then strenghts. Have not heard of anyone campaigning a GTO before ever.

Can get more absolute power in a Supra then Z with min mods. run a search its all very well documented. But I'd rather get Kojima's Z then a souped up Supra.

i think you are absolutely right. there's a supra sitting in my friend's workshop.

I compare it with my z, although my z has the look (not biased opinion coz mine has bodykit) but in terms of power..the supra is fantastic. may be it has bigger turbo or something..but my frined told me the mods for z are actually limited.

Limited, but also harder to find. Not interchangeable with SR20/RB26 engines...

Anyway, I have had my gearbox changed from auto to manual... you MUST have the manual rear diff, else the ration will be different. I think you get better acceleration but no top speed... and also you need the drive-shaft.

while you're down there, also check and the bushing for the rear diff.

Of course, other things are clutch pump, pedals,...

Manual tranny... that's how to drive a sports car!!
