Perdana V6 Community Forum *

corgia,

I'm driving the original V6 engine, year 2000. No modifications except for ATF oil cooler. If you don't want to, you don't have to change to turbo engine nor do any modifications to be able to enjoy the car.

If you want a smaller, get around the city car with slightly more boot space, then go for the Wira Aeroback. If you are an older gentleman, I think the Perdana is a more elegant option with more presence. Your passengers will appreciate it too. Many Ministers, even several PMs, have been in one :D Perdana is definitely more comfortable for driver and passenger than the Wira. It is a happy highway warrior with the V6 engine. Yet at 2.0 litres, the fuel consumption is not excessive compared to 3.0-litre V6 engines.

Spare parts are plentiful due to the sheer number of Perdanas that have been sold. Right now Proton is still manufacturing the car! It can also share parts with the Mitsubishi's made in Japan.

You can always meet the seller at a workshop of your choice to ask the mechanic to check. Almost all problems are repairable.

Regular wear-and-tear, maintenance items :
Change absorbers - RM80-RM100/pc
Brake pads - RM200-RM400 every 2-3 years
Oil change - RM100-RM200
Battery - RM270 every 1.5-2 yrs

The following issues might or might not need to be done, and prob only once in your ownership of 3-6 years.
Gearbox issues - RM1,000-RM3,000
Timing belt & spark plug change (every 60-100K km) - RM1,000
Aircon compressor - RM200-RM400
Alternator - RM200-RM400
Add ATF cooler - RM200-RM550
Suspension control arms - RM230/pc

It is a very nice cruiser to drive and easy to maintain. If you drive a Wira and a Perdana V6 back-to-back, you will definitely feel it is a different class altogether, even from the way the door closes more solidly.

I dont have a lot to spend. Around 20k the most. I need auto transmission. Wife says dont take loan because I am old already. So I can afford cheap car only . All this turbo stuffs and engine change scares me but I am willing to consider. Imagine my own inexpensive v6 turbo car. What I am worried is the maintainance pulak. I am ok with the normal v6 auto but if engine change would not give me headache later I would consider it. Spare part senang ke?. I have called one sellers today in mudah but not sure when to see the cars. Actually I am not prepared la. Dont know what to check. ha ha ha. Time is also a constraint at the moment. We will see how it goes. To some of you who are willing to accompany me already, I am most appreciative of the offer. Maybe someone can summarize for me the pros and cons of these engine change things and the estimated cost altogether with the car. Sometimes my wife suggest buy a wira aeroback only but perdana is so cheap nowdays. Is it worth while?

y u use 1.3bar rad cap? use 0.8 or 0.9 (not sure) only...

But why don't use 1.3bar? there are also 1.1bar (which i currently using).. original is 0.9bar..

i dun think so can use pajero block...havent heard before....
im currently using 0.9bar...havent tried using 1.1 or 1.3 bar before cos my fren once told me the water temp will increase.

After using the 1.1 bar cap and alu radiator, i find that the water inside the radiator keep on getting lesser a bit after each time i top up.. i wonder where the water would go? maybe changing back to 0.9bar will help? For the pajero block is actually i'm thinking of stroking up to 2.4 liter.. trying to gain a bit of torque..

Guys, need help badly. Anyone knows where to custom made seatbelt? I've been to a few acc shop, interior shop and a few other shop and they say cannot do. I never thought it was this hard to custom made a seat belt. I've changed my front seat to a bucket type but the lower part of the seat is abit too wide. It covers the seatbelt buckle so i cant clip my seatbelt in. Thinkin of getting a belt type buckle(refer picture. No.7). I've tried using the rear one but its too short. Anyone can help me with this one?

hspace,
Thanks for the info. Very conforting to find all sorts of advices here. I am keen on getting a proton perdana. I think it is a very reasonable used car to buy for its price nowdays. I have so far seen two sellers. I hv also called a few, some would sell their perdana year 2000 for 17K. On top of that I will allocate some contigencies as suggested here. I just want a standard perdana auto. The two I have seen exterior wise have a lot to be done, one of them seem to be fine with the engine (but I am not really sure). I have also been looking for someone to search around for me but of no avail. Mechanics wont leave their workshops and I am sure owners wont let me test drive far enough for a mechanic to see. Furthermore, it is embarracing to appear to be so fussy on a 17k car. Not expecting it to be like brand new off course but I trying not to be reckless in purchase you know what I mean.

There are a lot of year 2000 perdana out there, which one to buy requires help. Like I said teaching me how to inspect a car is useless. I am considering paying someone to help out. But this idea of paying someone also is no guarantee. How do I know this someone shall be delligent enough. So back to square 1 la. If only I can get someone to find a worthwhile year 2000 proton perdana for 18K (17K + 1K for himself). Any advice?

Nevermind, give it some time yeah. Who knows a nice perdana may come along. Maybe I should take a short break cause this is affecting my work. ha ha ha.

just ensure the gbox is in good condition, take it for a hard drive then rest it a while & test whether does the gbox faces any jerking issues. do ensure its equipped with an ATF cooler.

Hehheh. I've tried putting those harness just to see how it looks like on a perdana. And i dont think it suits the image of a perdana plus i tend to move alot in a car when cruising leisurely. With the original belt, i can still move my body freely. If one day decided to get a track car then can consider sabelt. Bcos i love the way it holds my body.

haha no probs...in that case u may need to fabricate another seatbelt bracket.....
go find the shop that ketuk kereta/mudguard.

HI All, Gong Xi Fa Chai!

I am new to this forum, new to Malaysia, New to Proton, and new to Perdanas.

Ive owned my 99' 6A12 manual for about 6 months now and must say its a great car. I got a good deal on it and of course being 12 years old it has had its share of issues glad to say minor ones from wear and tear.

My latest problem, potentially a big one... is my manual gearbox wont stay in 5th gear anymore. It will go into gear just fine however if I step on the accelerator too hard, or even the slightest bit, it will pop out of gear. I have to physically hold it in place which is verrrry annoying. Seeking the advice of guru/sifu's here.

questions are a) is it my clutch? it is fine in every other gear. b) is it my gearbox/tranny? c) if not what do you think it could be?

I am also due for a timing/cam belt service, about how much does it cost? I have had quotes anywhere from 700-1500 rm. Although Chinese, I am not local and it seems most (not all) mechanics are trying to take advantage of me!

Finally, The bushings in my stright and curved arms both front and rear are nearly non existent. I have been told i need to replace the entire set for about 1200 plus for all of them.
Is it possible to change just the bushings itself? if so where to source? if not, recommend to buy Japan 555 no? how to tell if made in japan?

Finally, sifu danz can you recommend a reputable mechanic who knows his perdanas? I live in Sepang but am willing to drive for a good mechanic.

Thanks for hearing me out any advice appreciated!

welcome bro..
1st yr manual tranny...im sure yr using a 232 or 222 gbox...from eterna 1.8 n/a...therefore yr gear 5 always 'tendang' as u mention above...its something gotta do with the gear synchros......u might need to change it.....anyways the reputable workshop i suggest will be AG MOTORSPORTS in Cheras bdr permaisuri...just look up lan_eterna.......very reputable & cheap....get a quotation from him before u agree to work on yr gbox...

for yr lower arm....u could opt for super pro bushings...not sure bout the price...ask NeurOne....
but the item could costs up to rm1k if not mistaken....(now could be cheaper im not sure)....

rm1.2k is the the entire arms for perdana (front & rear) of just those front straight lower arms?

japan 555 is about rm150 per pc.....there are 2 types....another 555 is made in kulim.....so u have to look on the manufacturer sticker where the item is made.

Danz, i've been trying to call lan from last week but he didn't pick up la. He's still on holiday ke? I need a Walbro 255 fuel pump. My car cannot start edi. I suspect its the fuel pump la. I've checked the relay and its still okay. Try to listen to the pump sound but there's none.
