Rotary engine oil...

the oil debate has been going o for donkey years. in the earlier part of ownership 2000 i was hard pressed to try anything cept for reccommended viscosity of 10w-30. WIth reference to your article on oils above please do take note that thats very much old oil technology. Question bout ash content blah blah has been around since the developement of synthetic oils. i personally run semi synthetic mobil or shell with no probs. so its really up to you. what eng oil are you running right now?

rite now i aint change my engine oil yet since i bought her bout 2month++..still find really specific answer, coz i read all around d world ppl talking bout RE cant use synthetic oil must use mineral base oil..so i looking all over spare part shop most of them didnt know bout specific rotary oil..some of them told me its ok to use synthetic but when i ask them why..they told me ''ya laa turbo car must use synthetic oil coz its good for ur turbo'' when i ask ist ok for my rotor and apex seals, they say they didnt know laa just try laa use..well i'm still not satisfied for the answer..so thats why i try to get some info from yall specificly.....but i think i wanna try follow mazdatrix advise using castrol extra 20w-50...any advise or coment bout it?,please....im still learning and my knowledge bout rotary is zero... :frown:

hi fellow~!!!How often (how many km) actually u guys change ur engine oil?? Let say for full syn, semi syn & non syn??? Thanks

I'm running castrol semi. I would say maybe 4k or when your oil is really really BLACK

Best is change as often as you can... :p :p

right jason!! the usage of semi syn in rotaries cannot be disputed. my car and at least another 5 cars run semi without any problems. The car is smoother and cooler as well. I change my engine oil out every 3000km and like Jason says its dirty. Also change out oil filter at every interval. Its a cheap part so no point saving a couple of bucks only to have it clogged up and blow your engine. What oil was the previous owner using? Also please do tkae note though, mazdatrix's advise is applicable based on their weather therefore viscosity might not be suited for our weather. You can choose to be anal bout engine oil and other oils but a very important factor is make sure you change out oils during service intervals.

Oil topics for rotary always stir up lots of confusion.. I like fresh oil in my engine as regularly as possible.. Hence have always been running on mineral oil since I got my car. Since its so dirt cheap and I can change it the night before any track day.. and drain it instantly after the heated run and all cost me for less than RM80. Mobil 1 Super XHP 20W-50 has always been my choice of oil. Actually, wouldn't mind putting any reputable oil comp's engine oil into my engine. As long as u get the viscosity right. Btw, there is an Idemitsu workshop just opened somewhere in Sunway, haven't got the chance to check it out yet.

There is a spring loaded bypass in the oil filter, if the filter element gets too clogged unfiltered oil fill flow through there.. since its better to have dirty oil than a blown engine..

actually i went there already they also didnt know..some more they told me the rotary oil have to order and very expensive, how much?they also didnt tell..just say it expensive...anyway thanks bro for yall advise...thanks a million... :)

idemitsu does not carry the rotary specific oil here in malaysia. IMHO if you have money to burn and want the best engine oil go with redline engine oils. If you take time and read their test/performance reports you'll take note that there is hardly any ash content post combustion. The oil debate hangs around the fact that which oil burns clean. As we already know rotary engines squirt a small amount of oil into conbustion chamber to lube apex seals. the argument on oils is the fear of oils not burning clean and therefore clogging seals that eventually cause major damage. So oils being oils and petrochemical technology now so much more advanced i'll confidently say that you can use most any oil sans viscosity must be correct.

Castrol GTX mineral is widely used in america and parts of the world. I personally used Mobil 20W50, and beleive a heavier weighted oil is suited to turbo applications. It does not matter what oil you use, as phat7 clearly pointed out that this debate has been on for donky years. What IS important is how often you change your oil. If you're scared about carbon buildup, there are products you can mix in with your petrol to atomise this junk. It is not common that engines are seized from locked apex seals from a buildup of carbon/unburnt crap, if you do you routine maintenance.

If you haven't already, I suggest you disable your OMP and run premix (any good 2 stroke mineral oil). The oil you use thereafter will not travel thru the OMP into the combustion chambers, so fear not about the oil you use. Just change it REGULARLY. BTW don't forget synthetic is fully compatible with mineral, so don't be afraid to mix if you want to change from one to the other (usually from mineral to synthetic)

Oh, any why do you keep refering to the oils as "rotary oil"? Their exactly the same as any other oil
OOH, another expensive one is Royal Purple. Can you get that in msia?

Not all oil are the same here in Msia. FYI, we have 'fake' castrol and Shell Helix here. Pls try to avoid the common brand, I heard Mobil is safe but the mentioned 2, I've never tried them and never will. My friend personally knows this guy that reprocesses used oil and fill them up in Shell Helix bottles. Apparently they have their way of getting the new bottles. Be careful.

i change my engine oil every 2.5 to 3k kms..rotay engine is just like a baby..need much attention n cares..

treat it well like ur son..

LOL

I think the most affordable RE specified engine oil is Trust F2 and F3 RE-Spec. Available at STWangan (Sunway area). Other place not known yet. One for Turbo and one for N/A. Oil filter can use greddy or oem. Package for NA is about RM300 or below. I'm using R-magic filter and Trust F3. But last month test on a cheaper solution (at my own risk). So far everything fine. But I found some article on both Mobil and Castrol web site (USA and UK) and they don't recommend their fully sync to be used on rotary engine.

How about Royal Purple? Have u tried it?
Royal Purple website got FAQ about using their oil in rotary engines.

heard about people using the RP and having good feedback.

Snook B,
For not using the wrong oil and proper way to maintain your rotary, do seek for Ah Choy. He will recommend you the suitable engine oil and etc. My car was serviced and maintained by Ah Choy before I sold my Rotary Rocket. Ah Choy is reliable, provide good service and reasonable price.

been running ROAR fully synthetics since 2006 for both of our RX7s. Oil temp never raise to 90c during a hot & sunny day and traffic jam at 95c the most. Trackday below 100c. Night cruising is between 75-80c at the speed of 140-160km/h.

the best is 20w-60 but very expensive... i'm using 20w-50 mobil is cheap n so far no problem... used 10w-40 big mistake... engine jerking smoke all over... already ordered 20w-60 motul will keep everybody update... gear oil also ordered motul 75w-140 but hvn't use...
