definitely i'll DIY my paintjob..

Sorry, Hijack another thread again. Can anyone give me a rough estimate as how much a 1200 Beetle would fetch in the market? It's fitted with an aircon and is in good running condition. A paint job is needed to make it complete. Fren ask me but I dunno the answer. So ask you sifus here.

my estimate is about 5k to 10k... that will be boleh tahan ler...if more restoratiaon more money to come...

sumwhere around 5-10k can get one..last time i bought a 1600 in boleh tahan condition for 7k..the restoration work costed me two times of the car's price..lucky got sponsor from someone...

VeeDub Drifting

Hiya Guys & Gals,

Chanced upon the topic while browsing through drift events log. Am in ownership of a few Beetles, a Kombi & a Split Screen now....after much patience. Both Beetles are done up, except my pride & joy was "hurt" in an accident involving two Turbo'd Wiralution wannabes, who banged into my rearend at high speed. Cracked my spine.....still in recovery...car nearly a total loss....sad....Now starting to save up again to rebuild/ build up the car or a donor.

Beetles can drift....if u don't believe me try and google Drifting beetles. You'll find some cool photos and vids. BTW, does anyone know that there's a monster of a Beetle with a Jap heart transplant that can clock speeds beyond 180km/h in Malaysia. I've seen it, I've ridden in it, I'm just too scared to drive it. The power is monumental! And the car can really drift, it's just that the owner doesn't wanna, saying no for chassis structural reasons. Anyone out there interested in finding out how a proper Jap engine transplant should be undertaken to breath new life into your classic ride, PM me....we did extensive R&D just to make that happen!

On a more traditional side, souping up your Beetle at a reasonable cost is kinda wishful thinking. Fit a cam in without doing proper profiling, changing your lifters, choosing the right cam and gears, etc. would only prove to be fun for a short time. In the long run, not only will your engine suffer, but your pocket and your brain too!

The best set up for a street-racer, within a reasonable budget would be:

1 - Start with a decent enough 1600 c.c engine, and look out for AS coded engines. The engine block should be AS21 or AS41.

2 - Get ready all your replacement gaskets and seals.

3 - Get bigger bore pistons. Recommended are 87mm KS or Mahle pistons. Cofap pistons? Do not even go there. If U can source out 88mm pistons, it's worth a try, but the pistons might prove to be a tad bit thin around its walls for our weather. For those who are more adventurous, 90.5 or 92 mm pistons can also be used, but then again, price would be much, much, much more expensive. 87mm pistons from KS last were sold by See Soon Jln Ipoh for RM1300. U can get them cheaper through our network.

4 - Want to use a more powerful camshaft? Try out Engle's W100 or 110 profiles. More than that and you'll have a tough time controlling your car, and not have a good time driving it. Cam from the FK series are just too powerful for daily-driven cars, and may not prove suitable. Again, no one in Malaysia stocks cams, but we can get them for you.

5 - What's stopping your car from performing? The fact that it doesn't "breathe" as expansively as it should! U can always upgrade to bigger carbs, say 34 twin Webers, but they're a b***h when it comes to tuning. Some might try going the 4-throttle way (toyota), only to find that it's mighty expensive. If you have ways and means of getting VW parts from the 'kedai potong', try and find 34 PICT 5/6/7 carbs. It's from the Golf Mk1 range, and it's substantial in gaining some extra oomph at a lower cost. Fuel injection systems? TOO EXPENSIVE!!!

6 - Get your engine and parts balanced by proper garages. Don't get some 'Pokok Ceri' guy to do so. Save money where U can, but sometimes, spend a little bit more for your own sake, and avoid double work.

7 - Fit it all up. If U have means to an external sump, an external oil cooler+ fan and some basic add-ons, fit them in as well.

8 - Beef up your transmission. Get EMPI, Rhino or Gene Berg transmission mountings, which ar proven to withstand tremendous pressure and exertions. Standard mountings? Daily sprints at the traffic lights can just break them apart. Trust me....4 mounting sets in one year.....don't waste your money. Upgrade to EMPI, Rhino or Gene Berg, dependant on your budget.

9 - Chromium plating your engine may make it look gorgeous, but does it have any effect on the engine's performance???
Yes, it does! It makes your engine run hotter than it should, because chrome does not disperse engine heat build-up. The way to go is to either just paint your engine external parts black, or polish those parts where possible. Chrome - No Go - Too Hot!

10 - Want off-the-record advice to whom U should entrust your engine rebuild? Ah Meng in USJ is one great guy, but be prepared to pay a certain premium, which would still be reasonable with the attention to detail and time-frame he spends on your engine. Laberg in Puchong is a one heck of a revolutionary. He's got zillions of ideas in his head, and knows how to put them in action. He's fairly cheap, but time-factor may be a bit of problem, unless U don't mind waiting.

That's all for now folks. Got to get back to work, to source out more money to realize my dream of a souped-up Kombi/Beetle. Take care, and have fun, whatever car U may drive! Drive safe though!!!!
