Audit report
Cattle and goat semen imported — and then wasted
MARDITECH Corporation, a subsidiary of the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi), spent RM1.39mil from 2007 to last year for insemination and embryonic transfer involving cattle and goats.
However, according to the A-G Report, some RM486,100 worth of semen were wasted as they remained unused.
The report said 3,800 straws of cattle and goat semen and 600 goat embryos were imported from South Africa and Australia between 2007 and last year for the purpose of artificial insemination.
Aside from that, Marditech also bought some 1,212 straws of goat semen from its nucleus farm in Kluang, Johor.
The average cost of goat semen is RM250 per straw and RM122 for cattle semen. Each goat embryo costs around RM1,391.
